Desert Essence Coconut Shampoo - Yay Compliments!

Pros:Lovely smell, great results

The Bottom Line: If you want to go organic and enjoy that lovely coconut scent, try this Desert Essence delight.

After I ran out of my previous shampoo, I wanted to try something new.  Sure, I've had great results from Biolage for a long while, but I wanted to rinse something better for the planet down the drain and maybe skip putting chemicals on my hair and skin - even if they're tested and considered safe.

So this time I went with a brand I was already familiar with.  Desert Essence.  I had their Blemish Touch Stick (which is awesome, by the way), so I figured I'd give their shampoo and conditioner a shot.  Each shampoo is geared toward a different bit of hair care - oily, fine, and so forth.  The coconut was "Nourishing for Dry Hair."  That's me.  My hair doesn't necessarily get too dry, but it's not oily either, so I always just opt for moisture in my shampoos.

A lot of people fuss about the sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates in shampoos (the stuff that makes them sudsy), but they also like it when shampoos get sudsy (despite the fact that the lather has no real function).  Whether or not you care, you can squeeze about a quarter sized amount into your palm (typical for any shampoo I guess) and start sudsing.  This shampoo lathers up very nicely.  Rich and foamy.  I'm not sure what does it, but it does a good job.

So I lather up and rinse off, just like any other shampoo.  It does an excellent job of cleaning hair - getting rid of oil and other icky things that might be involved (in my case, salt and chlorine from the pool) and leaves hair quite smooth afterwards.

The scent is quite nice but you have to like coconut, otherwise you won't be too happy.  It's very coconutty - almost like a sweet icing.  I did have one moment in the shower when I thought it was almost too much, but the scent doesn't linger too long.  It's more like, "Ooh, that's some coconut!" and then you're washing your hair and the scent relaxes.  When you're done with your shower, you're not doused in coconut either, so don't worry about that.  Only once and a while after you've dried your hair and everything you might notice a faint trace of it, and that's usually when you have all your hair lingering close to your nose - say, for example, me with my mid-back length hair and I'm bending over to tie my shoe.

I'm not sure what it's like once you're done showering and you haven't used the conditioner - or any conditioner for that matter.  I use conditioner every time I shampoo so my hair is softer, happier, and relatively tangle-free.  But I don't think it would be a tragedy if I did go without conditioner with this shampoo because it's meant to help dry hair anyway.

The shampoo is supposed to provide moisture, smooth frizzies, restore hair's natural luster, and leave hair feeling soft and healthy.  I've never really had a frizzy issue, but otherwise it seems to have hit upon all counts. I don't really know how drastic the change was, but I do know I got more compliments about my hair while using this shampoo.  That's not really something I usually get complimented and thought it was kind of interesting.  I think the biggest plus sign for this shampoo is when I went to cut my hair and the hair stylist commented on how nice it was and what good shape it was in.  Frankly, I was surprised since I had split ends galore (but that was due to not cutting my hair for, oh, 4 years), but I guess she was just looking at my hair overall.

So far I'm quite pleased with everything Desert Essence has to offer.  I intend to try more of their goodies and see what happens.

Don't forget to pair this shampoo up with its companion Coconut Conditioner!
