Cons: This is only the beginning!
Regardless of the extremely large Sterilite container of Duplo?s that we have I am always willing to add more. Thus being the case my cellular phone buzzed one day and a close girlfriend exclaimed, ?Want me to buy them they are only $1.99!? After inquiring with regard to what precisely she was speaking of I obliged to the 5 packages she was holding for me. I knew that the basic sets were normally around $5.00 each and considering these sets included 30 pieces there was no way I would pass. Thou can never have too many Duplo?s.
The DUPLO ~ Basic Set includes 30 basic pieces of varying shapes. All blocks are vibrant primary colors of green, blue, yellow, and red. Two of the pieces have eyes. The sizes vary and include square, rectangle, one hump and one curved piece. This classic set is interchangeable with other Duplo building blocks. If your child has never built with Duplo blocks this is a good set to start with. You will be able to realize if this activity is of interest to him/her.
Recommended age for this set is 1 ? through 5 years of age but older children and adults enjoy these also. The sizes of the blocks allow for comfortable maneuverability from small hands. The underside of each block snaps onto the raised top of each block. All pieces snap together easily and pull apart simply for little hands to work with. Construction possibilities are unlimited.
Duplo?s are an excellent tool for color recognition. I encourage you to build alongside your child and narrate while constructing. They will listen to you name the colors and talk over your design. This sets a premise of inspiration for their creativity to flow. You will soon hear them explaining their building principles. Another from of unschooling that occurs with these blocks is math encouragement. I use the blocks for math instruction also. One activity is patterning with DUPLO. I create a same block size tower with alternating colors. I talk while constructing:
?Green, Blue, Green, Blue, Green, Blue, Green, Blue? I am making a pattern.?
Children will recognize the formation while beginning to understand important math concepts. This also allows for teaching counting by ones, twos, threes, fives, and so forth.
I highly recommend adding an assortment of Lego Duplo?s to your home toy selection. All pieces endure a bleach water or soap water soak.
