| rmgood's Full Review: DUPLO - Special Value Tub |
This set of Duplos is one of the best values on the market today. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Duplos product, let me briefly explain. Duplos are a set of Legos for preschoolers ages 18 months to 5 years. They are significantly larger than regular Legos, making them a lesser choking hazard and easier to keep track of. And Duplos are smaller and more "Lego-like" (meaning square edges and more creative building options) than Primos which are designed for babies ages 6-36 months. My 18-month old received a large cute set of Primos for Christmas has had taken very little interest in them.
The Duplo set, on the other hand, she absolutely loves! This particular value tub contains 140 pieces in a convienent, stackable plastic green box with a yellow snap on lid. The box is very durable, the kind that's sure to last forever. The lid snaps on securely and easily so parents can shut away those Legos if they want to. My 18 month daughter has not yet been able to remove the lid, but <a word of warning</i> I don't think it will be too long before she figures it out.
The set itself includes a variety of shapes, sizes and styles of Duplos, offering a little more variety than most other sets. Among the many pieces included are two wheeled pieces that link together in a train-like fashion, two window pieces with a center piece that swings open, five pictured pieces and six different curved pieces. In addition to all these, there are several different sized and colored square and rectangular blocks.
The Duplos are solid, strong colors of red, blue, yellow and green. They are easy to wipe clean. Best of all, they are the most durable toys on the market. Step on them; throw them; smash them; whatever, and chances are they will survive in tact.
Disadvantages? I'm glad you asked! Well, for one thing, there are 140 parts and even with they're larger size, its easy for them to get lost under the couch, behind the chairs, at the bottom of the toy box... well, you get the idea. And be ready for some serious noise! These are not the toys to entertain your child while you conduct that important phone conversation with your mother! To me, the sound of Duplos clanging together is music to my ears because I know my daughter will play happily for a long time without causing trouble. But it is loud music, and not for the faint of heart! 140 pieces of hard plastic being thrown about makes hearing anything else nearly impossible.
I would definitely recommend Duplos as a perfect gift for any preschooler! Because they are so versitile, Duplos are sure to provide hours and hours of creative, constructive play and will last a very long time. At $20, this tub can be a little expensive, however Duplos frequently go on sale and even at $20 the price is well worth for all the use they will receive.
