| jps246's Full Review: D'Angelos |
This is one of my favorite New England sandwich shops. DAngelos are located everywhere throughout Massachusetts (often in association with a Papa Ginos a pizza restaurant), and are also throughout much of New England (though less of the scale that they are in Massachusetts). I have eaten at many DAngelos, including the City Place DAngelos in Boston, the one in Medfield, Massachusetts, several along the MassPike and others throughout New England. Each time, I have been impressed with a clean restaurant, quick service and good food.
What can you get to eat?
DAngelos is a sandwich shop first and foremost. In general, all sandwiches are offered on sub rolls (with several bread varieties now available including white and honey wheat), pita bread for pockets, or a roll-up. With regards to the sub rolls, three sizes are available, small, medium and large. Pockets are only available in the small size and wraps are considered as a large size. A basic rundown of the menu includes:
Hot Sandwiches
Chicken: Chicken Stir Fry, Ginger Chicken Stir Fry, and Teriyaki Chicken
Grilled Steak: Plain, Steak and Peppers, Steak and Mushrooms, Steak and Cheese, Steak DLite, Teriyaki Steak
Veggies: Classic vegetable
Burgers: Hamburger and Cheeseburger
Meatball: regular and with cheese
Pastrami: with and without cheese
Bacon: BLT
Cold Sandwiches
Veggie: Greek and Caesar
Poultry: Turkey, Stuffed Turkey, Turkey Club, Chicken Salad, Chicken Caesar
Roast Beef
Seafood: Tuna Salad, Seafood Salad, and Lobster Salad in season
Cold Cuts: Italian, Ham and Cheese, Ham, Salami and Cheese
Now this is just a basic outline of their sandwiches. All of the sandwiches can be modified in whatever way you would like them to be. Like bacon on your turkey sandwich? No problem. How about extra onions, but no pickles, again, no problem. Basically the sandwiches are all identified and laid out on the menu board when you come in, but if you want something special, or you want something that you do not see up there, if you ask, they will be able to make it for you.
DAngelos also has what it considers DLite sandwiches. These are sandwiches that provide no more than 30% of their calories from fat, 10% of their calories from saturated fat and 300 mg of cholesterol. These sandwiches include selections from the Chicken, Steak and Veggie hot sandwiches and Turkey and Roast Beef from the cold sandwiches section.
DAngelos also offers several different kinds of wrap sandwiches. They include a buffalo chicken wrap, a Caesar salad wrap, chicken Caesar salad wrap, turkey club wrap and a Greek supreme wrap.
Not feeling like a sandwich, pocket or wrap? Pick yourself up a salad. DAngelos offers a tossed salad, a Caesar salad, a chicken Caesar salad, a Greek salad, tuna salad, roast beef salad, antipasto salad, turkey salad and finally a chicken salad (think you can find a salad you would like?).
Still cant find something that you like? There is also a selection of soups that are available.
In addition various kinds of potato chips, cookies and brownies are available. Most sandwiches can be made into a combo-meal with the addition of a bag of chips and a soda. DAngelos uses Pepsi products for their beverages, so expect to see the likes of Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Diet Pepsi, etc. available for you to drink.
Prices are reasonable for the portions that are provided. Small sandwiches run anywhere from $3.59 up to $4.89 and larges run from $5.69 up to $8.09. To make the sandwich into a combo-meal, add $1.50 for a medium drink and a bag of chips. Salads are between $3 and $5 dollars and the soups are between $2 and $4 depending on whether you get a small or a large portion and the kind of soup that you get.
Quality on all food items is very high. The bread for sandwiches is always fresh, cold-cuts are high quality, vegetables and salad materials are all fresh. I have yet to come across bad product while I have been eating at DAngelos. Looking back behind the counter, the service areas are kept neat, and what you can see of the kitchen area (which is most of it from the design of the restaurant), the kitchen area is also well maintained and very clean.
Hows the service?
DAngelos are set up so that your order is taken and you pay first. Once you pay, you are given a receipt with the number of your order on it. They then prepare your order, in the order that it was received and call out your number when it is ready. It can get confusing at times, especially during very busy times, as everyone stands around waiting for their sandwich and it can be hard to hear your number or get up to the counter to pick up your meal.
I have always run into friendly and helpful service people when they have been taking my order. Im fairly picky with sandwiches and I hate having vegetables on them and hate mayonnaise even more (yes, I like a dry sandwich with just meat and cheese generally) so I always have a special order when I am at DAngelos. However, in all the times that I have had a sandwich there, not once have they screwed up. That cannot be said for McDonalds, Burger King or any other numerous places, where getting a burger without pickles or without cheese is a 50/50 operation.
Service is quick, even during busy times. The only exception is when you order hot sandwiches and then it will take a little longer because they cook up the sandwich for you. Thus the service isnt really slow, but it does take longer than say a turkey sandwich does.
The restaurants have always been clean and well maintained, along with the bathrooms. However, Ill add the caveat that the Medfield DAngelos is the only sit-down restaurant style DAngelos that I eat at with any regularity. The others that I eat at regularly (the ones on the Pike and the one near my office) are both service only and open up onto food courts, so the dining area and bathrooms are not necessarily the responsibility of DAngelos. But when I have stopped in at a random DAngelos in my travels, I have never been disappointed (like I have been stopping in at other fast-food restaurants).
The Final Take
I like fast food, I admit it. However, sometimes even I reach a point where I dont want to see another french-fry or another deep friend chicken patty. That is where DAngelos comes in. They provide fast food that is healthy and good for you (if you stay away from those burger subs) and are a great alternative for the typical fast-food experience. They are especially great for your lunchtime at work. Go and grab a tasty sandwich or salad, some chips and a nice cold drink. Youll feel a lot better than if youve just eat a Big Mac and a large order of fries. I know I find myself eat at DAngelos more than anywhere else at work and Im in Boston, where I have choice after choice everyday for lunch.
DAngelos has good food, quick service, friendly staff and respectable restaurants. You really could not ask for more in a sandwich shop.
