Pros: Good, fresh tasting sandwiches that come out quickly.
Cons: They don't pack napkins.
The Bottom Line: D'Angelos has a good assortment of fast-food-sandwiches and you don't have to wait on long-lines to get them. Though the fillings are very good, I don't care for their breads.

| popsrocks's Full Review: D'Angelos |
When I travel through Connect I Cut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire on my way to Maine's Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor or the Portland area to see my daughter at school I sometimes stop for a quick something to eat. D'Angelos can be found throughout all these states, Vermont too. There are none in the NY area where I live.
A stop I have made a few times off the Mass. Pike a number of times is D'Angelos. It's connected at the hip with the Italian pizza place Papa Gino's. That's smart marketing, one stop that happens to satisfy many travelers though they are not together in New York locations.
Another Fast Food Restaurant
The green, white and red colours are inviting and blend both eateries together. These are fast food restaurants. You go up to the counter, order, pay and then given a number. They call the number and you pick it up and move onto the table of your choice. These places are clean enough and have an open-air atmosphere of 'people on the move'. The choices and specials are clearly noted above the counters and the staff is friendly enough for such a location and everything comes out quickly, very quickly. Sodas are purchased, they give you the proper sized cup and you fill em' at the station. These are Pepsi products including Mountain Dew, Mug Root Beer, Sierra Mist, Dr. Pepper, fruit punch and pink lemonade. I saw an add somewhere on TV recently stating that "Stealing sips is not illegal in America". I'm not sure it's true but I do notice many people purchase and pay for a small soda and fill it with an extra sip here, an extra sip there, here a sip, there a sip, everywhere a sip, sip.
Anyways, I can only tell you that these stops off I-90 offer everything the regular shops do offering burgers, meet ball, and steak and chicken both offered in a number of different styles. These are served hot.
They also have many roast beef, turkey, tuna, chicken, ham and cheese sandwiches on that sub or pokket as they call them.
Though I didn't try any of them you can also get wraps, salads, soups and food for the diet conscious.
I have seen these places in Portland. It's a pretty good assortment they offer. On special this week according to their signs is the "Lobstah Sub or Pokket as they call their open stuffed flat piece of nothing tasting bread skin. No I don't care for it but I can say their "stuffings are first rate, that includes the lobster.
Two Favorites of Mine
I had the lobster on a sub. Unfortunately I don't care for the sub bread either, to dry and tasteless, but again they stuffed it well. The lobster was in good sized chunks, fresh tasting and sweet. It also had a mayo-type dressing it was mixed in that was dripping loose. I liked that even though it was advertised as a light toss of the mayo.
The "lobstah special" is expensive though at $10 for a small. I will say the small is still a pretty good sized sandwich, even for this big guy. I will have it again if this seasonal treat is offered. I'm gonna try the Maine Lobster Bisque next time too.
I've had their Number 9 and it is a favorite of mine. I had to try it because of the name and it's association with the Beatles. I don't know why or how it received that name from D'Angelos, but it attracted me. It's kinda like a Philly sandwich but with much more flavour and texture. As their ad says it has "Grilled steak, mushrooms, peppers, onions and cheese, grilled to perfection!"
Last Thoughts
I like the fact that I can go to a counter, order and the food comes out quickly. I find waiting at place like Subway, Blimpies and Quizno's take too long to take and make orders. I'm one who counts minutes when driving the long 12 hour rides. That's what it takes to bring my daughter too and from school and get back home again. I don't mind the drive but I also don't like to waste time. The food is also very fresh tasting and neatly packed. Yes, I eat on the road. They haven't messed up the orders and the food is not to heavy on me either. I don't like driving on a full stomach.
All round they have a good complete order selection and though I have had their companion Papa Gino's Pizza, I doubt I'll ever get a slice over a good sandwich when on the road.
One thing though, they don't pack napkins!! Be sure to get them at the self-serve counter so you can clean up that lobster and mayo mix dripping down your shirt as you drive I-90.
