Living in the San Francisco Bay Area I have the option to avoid driving to work by taking BART, our regional public transit system. BART is fast and comfortable, but does not allow full-size bikes in its cars during rush hour. This is a problem if you do not live or work within walking distance of a BART station.
To deal with this issue and get out of traffic I recently bought a folding Dahon Boardwalk 6 at Avenue Cyclery here in San Francisco. Because it folds it is allowed on BART at all times. The bike is affordable at $249 and has been wonderful so far. I am 6'4 and the bike fits me better than my regular Raleigh mountain bike. It folds effortlessly and very quickly and feels very sturdy when you're riding it. The frame is clearly over-dimensioned, so it won't flex when you ride. This also makes the bike kind of heavy (close to 30lbs), but you don't carry it much, because it is so easy to fold and unfold. The bike has six speeds and combined with the small wheels (which give you a quick start from a stop) it is easy to pedal uphill, even here in San Francisco.
