Thank you for the online store recommendation!! Since we moved to New Hampshire, it's gotten harder to find the ingredients we need. =}

Good points.. (Reply to this comment)

I myself love South Indian food, although I can no longer take the heat level. However, the ingredients can be tough to get (even from an ethnic store), and the flavors are definitely not the usual kind.
I should mention that there is an online store called www.namaste.com. I haven't ordered from them in a while (in part because they now have free shipping and handling for over $75 in orders only, and their shipping costs for the amounts I buy are too much). Nevertheless, they are or used to be one good source for finding South Indian spices.
The beginner to South Indian food would probably want to try something blander. I would recommend a yogurt based rice dish (not bisibela, however - too spicy).
Good job. My mouth started watering half-way through.

Might I suggest a cookbook that I've reviewed/swear by called "World of the East" by Madhur Jaffreys. Her recipes are primarily Indian, but the book has a great glossary and wonderful explanations of those more exotic ingredients and ideas.
