| mizgnomer's Full Review: Dannon Light 'N Fit Non-Fat Yogurt With Splenda |
I recently had my second child, and that extra pregnancy weight just isn't coming off like it did after my firstborn. Since I can't "diet" yet (at least not until baby is weaned) I've been trying to make healthier choices when it comes to meals and snacks. I've been eating more yogurt recently, and when I learned that Dannon had a new Light 'n Fit line with Splenda, I figured it was worth a try.
The Product Specs:
Dannon's new Light 'n Fit yogurt line has only 60 calories per container (as compared to their regular Strawberry which contains 170 calories, for example) and zero fat! The plastic containers hold 6 ounces of yogurt (a good snack size) and have a foil top.
According to their website, the flavors available are: Blackberry, Blueberry, Cherry Vanilla, Lemon Chiffon, Orange Mango, Peach, Raspberry, Strawberry, Strawberry Kiwi, Vanilla, and White Chocolate Raspberry
Here's the Nutritional Information & Ingredients from my Strawberry Kiwi container:
Calories: 60
Fat calories: 0
Total fat: 0
Cholesterol: <5mg
Sodium: 85mg
Potassium: 250 mg
Total Carbs: 11g
Sugars: 7g
Protein: 5g
Ingredients: Nonfat yogurt (cultured Grade A non fat milk, modified corn starch, kosher gelatin, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin D3), strawberries, water, kiwi puree, contains less than 1% of modified corn starch, natural flavor, sucralose, sodium citrate, potassium sorbate (to maintain freshness), malic acid, red 40.
What I Thought:
Well, the stuff tastes good! I sampled a cup of Strawberry Kiwi. The yogurt is pre-blended, with small bits of (in my case) strawberry mixed throughout. I've got quite a sweet tooth, and my sugary cravings were satisfied. There was no bitter aftertaste like you get with some artifical sweeteners. I would say that the consistency is just a touch thinner than the non-light version, but not enough to be off-putting (and I'm a big texture person).
I am a science geek and I've read up on how the different "artificial" surgars are made. To be honest, I'm more of an "all natural" person and try to avoid artificial sweetners as a whole, however out of all of them Splenda/sucralose is the one I will eat occasionally. It tastes sweet with no weird aftertaste, and science has yet to find any bad side-effects (although some people question the chlorine, but the jury is still out). Because Dannon uses Splenda to sweeten their Light 'n Fit I can eat it without worry (and it does a great job of fooling my taste buds).
Final Thoughts:
Dannon's Light 'n Fit was really yummy, and I do plan on getting some more to take for snacks at work (plus I really want to try that White Chocolate Raspberry - sounds delicious). At only 60 calories, 11 grams of carbs, and 0 fat, maybe it will help me get back to my pre-prenancy weight again soon!
