Pros: catchy tunes, songs to rock out to as well as chill to
Cons: some unoriginal ideas, typical drugs and sex theme overdone, not much a variety
The Bottom Line: Overall, this album isn't Nickelback's best work. I would recommend it to someone who liked Nickelback, but I don't enjoy this album as much as the others.
bumpsetspike's Full Review: Dark Horse by Nickelback
My boyfriend bought me this album, Dark Horse, as we are both fans of Nickelback. After listening to these songs multiple times each, I think I have been able to form a decent opinion of it. It is not a bad album, I would say it's mediocre. It's not the best they've done but it's enjoyable.
Catchy Tunes, Not-So-Catchy Lyrics
I have always liked the sound of Nickelback. In this album, the sound is really catchy for most of the songs. Lyrically, however, there could be some improvement. For example, "Something In Your Mouth". The tune to that sound makes me want to rock out and blast that sh**. But I'm just not feeling the words and that kind of puts a strain on my desire to rock out to that song... I mean have you heard these lyrics? They're a bit ridiculous. You naughty thing, you naughty woman. It just drives me nuts. At first I thought it was satire but I'm pretty sure it's not.
Overdone "Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll" Theme
Needless to say, there are several songs on Nickelback's Dark Horse album that follow the stereotypical rocker's theme of "Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll". It's a bit overdone, in my opinion. There are at least four relating to sex, and its a bit annoying since almost all of those seem to devalue females. There is also two about partying and getting trashed, and the mention of smoking weed in another (nothing wrong with that, don't get me wrong). There is an anti-drug song if that means anything...
Little Variety
So, this album has about three different categories of song themes. Two have already been mentioned, and the third is (Yes, you guessed it): Love. If the song doesn't have to do with some hot chick you can't have, banging someone, or partying all the time, then it's about love. I have to say that "I'd Come For You" has to be my favorite song on this album, speaking of this category. There is only one song that doesn't fit any of these categories in this whole album, and that is "If Today Was You're Last Day", which is a decent song.
