cmaw63's Full Review: Dean R. Koontz - Darkfall: Library Edition
Dark has fallen outside your home. Are you ready for what's inside?
In Darkfall what hunts under the cover of night is impossible to believe...yet it's there...exacting deadly and gruesome revenge on the Carramazza mafia family of New York City.
The creatures summoned from the pits of hell, by Baba Lavelle's bocor (evil) voodoo, are more cunning and dangerous than anything Homicide Detective, Jack Dawson, has ever encountered in his years on the force. Dawson leads the manhunt for Lavelle, finding in the process that he is untouchable by Lavelle's brand of magic. He doesn't know why he's immune to the evil, but quickly realizes that it does not extend to his children, Penny & Davey.
How far will Lavelle go to protect himself from being stopped by Jack before he is done with his revenge?
Children provide a special satisfaction to those that dwell below.
Will Jack pull himself off of the case or hope that between him and his partner, Rebecca Chandler, they can stop the evil before it kills more of the Carramazza family... but, more importantly, before it claims Penny and Davey?
My Thoughts on Darkfall
I like this older Dean Koontz book with the more twisted creatures than his modern writings. I have the 1984 edition of Darkfall.
Darkfall, with it's likeable human characters fighting against an unusual villian and his creatures of the night makes for action that keeps me from putting the book down, even after reading it 3 times. I enjoy Dean Koontz's use of believable character interactions amid the, hopefully, unbelievable evil.
Jack and Rebecca's rapport on and off the job is well written. Koontz doesn't always make it a smooth and friendly relationship.
For me, 11 and a half year old, Penny is the star of the book. She's tough and vulnerable, brave and scared. Her concern in being a role model for her younger brother since their mother had passed away is touching. Yes, even amid the chaos and murder I found parts of this book touching.
You won't find the humor that Dean Koontz has injected into his more recent books, but if you like things that go bump & hiss in the night...read Darkfall... with all the lights on.
In this Koontz classic tale, a blizzard brings a city to a standstill--and ushers in an evil that defies imagination. This repackaged edition includes...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
