Saint Nicholas and Six to Eight Black Men: and other Stories

Written: Dec 29 '03 (Updated Jan 15 '04)
Pros:You will laugh until it hurts
Cons:Stadium Pal was not new material
The Bottom Line: David Sedaris is just plain funny. He tells stories they way I wish I could tell stories.

I was cruising iTunes http://www.epinions.com/iTunes_Online_Service and found
David Sedaris Live at Carnegie Hall. As a big fan on National Public Radio and a Chicagoan I listen to This American Life. This American Life is an one hour long weekly documentary about a different subject, they tend of have 3 or 4 acts to tell the overall story. David Sedaris is a very frequent commentator for this program, and if you are driving while he is on, it might be best to pull over because tears will be streaming down your face while you mouth is stuck in a perpetual smile.
www.thislife.org almost every show is available free of charge.

The background of this “book on tape” which is really a live performance recorded at Carnegie Hall is that once a year he preforms his works live to get a feel for the material before he publishes it.
So in truth this is a book BEFORE TAPE!

STORY 1
The first story is about visiting his sister. Visiting family is hard for everyone and a little bit harder when you make a living telling personal stories about your life and the life of your family. In one segment David reminisce about how fun it was to get high and think about who will play you in the movie version about your life. He quickly goes into the fact he and his sister no longer get high and his life has just be optioned

STORY 2
If you have read his previous book you will know David spent a few years living in France with his lover. Language was always a problem for him, he failed out of French School and the French do know English but don't like to help you if you don't know French.
This is a story about a dinner party where he was trying to tell a story in French about his Boss (in French a Boss is a chef). His boss had a rubber hand, is lover insisted it wasn't a rubber hand but maybe plastic. This of course ruined the momentum of his story to the dinner guests and started and argument about if the hand was rubber or plastic.

STORY 3
TWO WORDS “STADIUM PAL”
If you don't know what a stadium pal is, then google it. This story alone is worth the price of this CD!!!!

STORY 4

The story starts with how Roosters crow different in all countries. And if you go over seas and tell someone a Rooster says Cookadota Doo they will like at you like a fool.

He then goes into the origins of Santa Claus.

I laughed so hard at this one. In the Netherlands Saint Nicholas comes from Turkey (and dresses like he does) he doesn't like in the North Pole but in Spain. He arrives by Boat and delivers gifts on white horses. He is helped not by Elf's but by Six to Eight Black Man (until 1950's they were 6-8 slaves) now they are just good friends.

This story is so funny I had to pause it 3 times so I could continue to listen.

Just one last point about this CD I didn't purchase it at Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobles I purchased it at iTunes and $10.95 (no savings) from purchasing it on-line but I didn't have to purchase something to get the free shipping and I got to listen to it within 3 minutes of deciding I wanted to listen to it.

If you want to purchase this CD and don't want to DEAL with going to the store, check it out at APPLESŪ iTunes

It would be GREAT if iTunes came up on Shopping.com's search engine.
