kristinafh's Full Review: Davines Alchemic Conditioner Red 250ml
Although my husband is of the belief that the "expensive ones work better", I am a girl from the poor side of the tracks and I know from experience that anything that is exorbitantly expensive should be suspect.
So let's take hair conditioner, shall we?
About three years ago, I was introduced to this product - Davines Alchemic Conditioner (Red).
Why? Because I was asked to use it and give my feedback on the product. I had used some other Davines products (purchasable at that time only through salons) and had mixed experiences with them. I was usually drawn to these products because of their scant/plain packaging and their appearance of more natural/basic ingredients.
I've had my hair colored for years - mostly for variety - but over time, you know - it went from isn't it fun to color my hair to oh my gosh, I see grey....must color hair. I had been trying to slowly, but surely, introduce hair products that would maintain/lengthen the amount of time between coloring appointments. I'm not made of money ya know. I was told that this product was one which would maximize my color and allow me to put off coloring appointments a lot longer than other products.
For this particular Davines product, if I would have went on first impressions alone, I would have never given it a second chance.
My first impression of the product was as follows.
* A brown, glass bottle? Are you for real? I'll be clumsy, it'll fall on the tile bathroom floor, and I will have a red-stained mess to deal with.
* What is that smell? Yep. At first whiff, it smelled all rose-like. Ugh, I am not a floral-rosey type of chick.
* Oh my gosh! That color is WAY brighter than my hair color. I mean my hair is brownish-red and this color here is bright pinkish-red. I'm gonna look like Frenchy from Grease!!!
* Ick...the consistency is pasty...The conditioner is kind of like icing in consistency. Now, I'm a BIG BIG fan of icing - not so much though on my hair.
I decided to wait and use it until the weekend. I was fearful of smelling like a rose garden - maybe even breaking out from the overpowering scent and I figured on the weekend, I would be more relaxed and less likely to drop the bottle.
What It Promised Me * Longer-lasting color - i.e. the continuation of that expensive color I purchased at the salon. * Soft and silky hair. * Prevention and protection of split-ends.
How You're Suppose To Use It * Wash your hair as normal. * Towel dry. * Spread a gob of it in like you would normal conditioner. * Let sit five to eight minutes. * Rinse. How I Use It * Wash my hair as normal. * Eliminate lots of moisture from my hair (with my hands, as I'm standing in the shower). * Spread a gob of it like I would normal conditioner. * Leave in for 2-3 minutes while I take care of other shower tasks. * Rinse.
Results Surprisingly, the scent is not overpowering and doesn't cause me any type of allergic reaction. That is like the first major issue that will make me toss any product to the side.
Next up, my hair took to this conditioner like a moth to a flame. It drinks it in and as crazy as it seems - my hair feels more nourished and taken care of. I read some stuff on the label about milk proteins. Sounds scientific. Don't care. My hair likes it. That works for me.
I don't have any issues applying the conditioner and for the most part, it rinses out easily. I say for the most part because I am a stickler for ensuring that the water runs clear (instead of off-reddish pink) before I step foot out of the shower.
I don't understand how my hair doesn't turn pink. What I do notice however is that my hair has more bounce, is shinier, keeps the salon hair color much longer (about 4 weeks more) and it also tends to look like I have added highlights after using it for a period of time.
Now here's an unusual bonus for me.
I usually get my hair trimmed up every six weeks. Due to a set of bizarre circumstances, it was a total of twenty weeks before I was able to see my regular stylist again. She remarked that I had absolutely no split-ends. A total shock - not because I was used to getting them, but because both of us were amazed at how well my hair held out.
As a side note, since I have utilized this product on and off for the past three years, it was inevitable that I would drop the frickin' glass container. I'm pleased to report that the container doesn't break. In fact, the company will tell you that the glass is specially made for klutz's like me. Seriously.
