Disneyland, Davy Crocket’s Canoes: Are you ready to work on your vacation?
Written: Dec 17 '06 (Updated Dec 18 '06)
Pros:Calming, scenic,
Cons:You can get wet and sometimes frustrated with the person in front/behind you.
The Bottom Line: A cute and simple ride but if you don’t it once, you’re done it a thousand times.
This is an older ride at Disneyland. You get to experience what it is like to paddle your own canoe (with 20 others) around the Rivers of America.
How it works.
You go through the queue line like normal, but you get your very own paddle before you board. There are two sizes of paddles available, regular and a smaller version. In addition, the younger ones will be required to wear a life vest. Something I didnt have to do during my childhood.
Then you get into a canoe, the worker gives you some instructions, and you begin to paddle.
There really is not a whole lot to see. There are a couple of animatronic animals and indians to see along the way. In addition you have the scenic island to look at as well as plenty of vegetation and the old railroad line.
Who is this for?
All ages. People must be ambulatory. Individuals in wheel chair must be able to transfer to the canoe.
When is it open
It is only open on busy days and when it is warm out. You will get wet.
Battery life
No batteries or electricity needed. It is the only ride in Disneyland that is solely powered by the individuals on the ride (that means you get to work).
Can you get wet?
Most likely you will. And you dont get wet from waterfalls or rapids. Rather you get wet from the guests in front or in back of you that careless paddle. Because of this reason I only recommend this during hot weather. If you do not like people (or at least being close to them) then this ride is not for you. Go Shoot some stuff instead.
How come these canoes dont tip over.
I asked this question and the reason is because that canoe has a very large keel. So you can have a strong old man stand up and threaten the person behind him and not tip the canoe over (just dont ask how I know this.)
Capacity: about 20 guests
Summary
This is a guest operated ride in Disneyland. It is actually located in three parts of Disneyland; Critter Country, Frontier Land, and New Orleans. You get to paddle yourself around Tom Sawyers island and see many different sights including some animatronics. There is also no track; you are a free-floating object. But for someone that doesnt mind being close to others, or getting wet, it is a nice relaxing ride on water.
