DC HeroClix Crisis: Unique Kingdom Come Superman — More Powerful Than a Locomotive

Pros:Extremely powerful; lots of powers; lower point cost for value

Cons:Extremely hard to find; pay a fortune for it on eBay or other places

The Bottom Line: Unique Kingdom Come Superman proves why he is going to be the last man standing in most game scenarios. Chalk it up to good Kryptonian genes.

In 1996, Mark Waid and Alex Ross crafted a tale called Kingdom Come, a four-issue limited series that takes place twenty years into the future of the then-current DC Universe. It was a tale dealing with the conflict between the old-fashioned, "traditional" superheroes, such as Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League, and a growing population of younger, self-appointed "heroes" who act without any responsibility or morals. Designated as an "Elseworlds" story (meaning that the story is "imaginary"), it is later revealed that the events of Kingdom Come takes place on Earth-22, after the events of Infinite Crisis re-establishes the Multiverse once again. One of the most pivotal players from that story is Superman, who is now older and even more powerful than before. WizKids produced a Kingdom Come Superman in the DC HeroClix: Unleashed set and it is still one of the best versions of the Man of Steel for this game. Now they do it again with DC HeroClix: Crisis as Unique Kingdom Come Superman shows the world why he is truly more powerful than a locomotive.

This version of Superman is insanely powerful yet his point value is a bit less than his Unleashed counterpart. The mechanics of the HeroClix game has evolved so each figure now comes with a character card with special powers specific only for their use, and there are a few unique abilities that will turn the tide of battle in Superman's favour.

One such ability is called Scorched Air, allowing Superman to use a combination of Charge and Flurry in one turn. Imagine Superman moving towards his opponent and attacking not once but twice in one turn. The man can kill you with one attack considering that his attack value starts at +12 and his damage value to his opponents is 5. Do that twice with one action (if he successfully connects) and anyone with a life span of 10 clicks or less (which is almost every figure) will be annihilated. This ability is available for Superman on his first two clicks and on his sixth, seventh and eighth clicks.

To make matters worse, his Kryptonian Strength (another special ability) allows him to carry two standard objects at the same time. He can, however, only use one object per attack. So imagine Superman picking up two objects as he is barreling towards opponents. The combination of Scorched Air and Kryptonian Strength will allow him to successfully do (depending on the object) up to 8 points of damage to any opponent on each attack. And the best part is that he doesn't have to use Flurry on just one opponent so he can really take out two opponents in one successful action. He has this ability for the first four clicks on his dial.

And to add the final nail to the coffin, his last special ability is called Restoring Order. When Superman makes a successful attack after rolling doubles on the dice, the target is dealt with normal damage, but doesn't receive any knockback action. Instead, if that target has zero or one action token after the attack is resolved, give that target an action token. What this means is that your opponents are now royally screwed. If your opponent has no action tokens, they will receive one after this attack. It means now that they have to make the difficult option of attacking (and taking an extra click of damage by pushing as a result of having one token already) or passing on their turn (and hoping that no one attacks them until the next turn). If that opponent already has one token and has to receive another one, then they automatically take an extra click of damage (from pushing) and cannot attack until both tokens are cleared away on their next turn. Superman has this ability for the first four clicks on his dial as well. These three powers alone are enough to irritate opponents.

Throughout all of that, he also possesses an array of other powers such as Hypersonic Speed (three clicks), Charge (two clicks), Super Strength (four clicks), Quake (two clicks), Impervious (three clicks), Invulnerability (five clicks), Toughness (two clicks), and Close Combat Expert (two clicks). This is all found on his dial of ten clicks (out of twelve). I'm actually surprised that his lifespan is only ten clicks considering that someone this powerful would be eleven clicks deep, but I guess having one less click on the dial reduces the point cost. His Hypertime team ability (formerly known as Kingdom Come) makes it hard for opponents to move adjacent to him if they roll either a 1 or 2 on a die.

The sculpt is a nice powerful version of the character with him in mid flight holding massive debris over his head. The black and red variation of his S-shield and the white temples on his hair indicate that this is the Kingdom Come version of Superman (Kal-El). This Superman is extremely hard to find. You would need to buy two caseloads of this set in order to see if he is even in it. Just to make fanboys even crazier than they already are, there is another version of this sculpt with a different S-shield known as Earth-2 Superman (Kal-L) or the "Golden Age" Superman. He is well over the 300 point total and is even more powerful, yet he seems to be a more balanced figure for his point cost. The Kingdom Come version is really a steal considering his low point cost and powerful abilities. However, both these figures are deemed extremely rare, or "Chase" figures as commonly known. To indicate just how rare, both of these characters have been sold on eBay for as low as $100 and even close to $200 each. I was just lucky I got mine the old fashion way... I pulled him out of a booster pack.

Unique Kingdom Come Superman is an extremely, powerful figure that can fit comfortably even in a 300-point game. It will be hard for opponents to knock him out quickly. It's possible to do but not before taking some serious damage to your team. After all, who in their right mind would attack Superman of all people especially when he is at his most powerful state? Most likely those who feel they can take down the Man of Steel.
