| emptywishes's Full Review: DeFalco's Italian Grocery & Deli |
In my tender youth, going out for dinner was nearly unheard of. Even a trip to McDonalds was rare, and never would we be allowed to order a happy meal... do you realize how much they charge you for that toy?!
However, time has passed, and things have changed. The family has less mouths to feed (and the kids are no longer growing), and my mom has had her fill of cooking dinner every night. And while those trips out to a restaurant still aren't a weekly occurrence, my parents (and sister) have a few, tried-and-true takeout joints, and Defalco's is up near the top of that list.
Defalco's is actually a combination deli and italian grocery, so you'll have to walk past a few shelves of pastas, peppers, wines, and other goodies before arriving at the counter. Crook up your head, and you'll find the long list of offerings. Try not to get a cramp (trust me, it'll take you a while to decide).
Granted, this is a deli, so most choices fall under the sandwich category. From more "american" offerings like egg or chicken salad, to capacollo, hard salami, and provolone, they have it all. They also offer a wide selection of hot favorites, like meatball, italian sausage, or roast beef au jus. All sandwiches come with a choice of bread from the list of (take a deep breath before reading this off, kids): sub roll, wheat roll, seeded sub roll, marble rye, sourdough, nine grain, or focaccia. They'll even heat up one of their cold sandwiches for you, if that's your fancy.
I selected the chicken parmigiana, which consisted of the oh-so-obvious breaded chicken breast with melted mozzarella and their homemade pasta sauce on a sub roll. The bread was deliciously fresh, the cheese perfectly melted, and just the right temperature for immediate consumption. I could've gone for a little more garlic in the sauce, but the amount of garlic I could eat would scare off an entire colony of vampires, so most would approve of the given dosage. On this last trip, my mom and sister opted for cold sandwiches on sourdough and were equally pleased.
Sandwiches do come in whole and half sizes, but don't be a wuss... get the big one. Six bucks isn't going to break the bank. If you're a wimpy eater (hi mom!), it'll make for a delicious lunch tomorrow.
Of course, if sandwiches aren't your thing, you have plenty of other options. Focaccia pizzas, various pasta dishes, and salads of all varieties (lettuce, potato, macaroni, what have you) are also up for the taking. And if your sweet tooth is crying out for some attention, assorted cakes and other goodies are also to be found. I had a sinfully rich, chocolate-dipped cannoli here the last time, and it was nothing but delightful.
Defalco's is located on Scottsdale Road, near Thomas, in the Scottsdale Oak Shopping Center, right across the parking lot from another family favorite, China Wok. They do offer inside seating, as well as a small patio outside, but the street noise may discourage you from basking in the sun. Oh, and if you're making your first visit, I suggest calling ahead; while their weekday hours are quite respectable, their weekend hours are somewhat quirky (closing on Sunday at 4pm?!).
Stop in, pick up a sandwich, and give 'em a hearty bravissimo!
