| del-1's Full Review: DeWalt 14.4 Volt Drill Kit DW928K-2 |
The Basics:
My DeWalt 14.4 Volt Drill came with the following
* Black plastic case with metal locking clasps
* Battery Charger
* Two 14.4V XR batteries
* The actual Cordless Adjustable Clutch Driver/DRILL
* Instruction manual
* One flathead/philips bit
* A few drillbits
The Positives:
+ Power! You can feel it and it comes on smooth.
+ Adjustable TORQUE from 1 - 23 for settings
+ Variable speed switch depending on how far you depress the trigger
+ Forward/Reverse/Lock button
+ TWO BATTERIES!
+ 1 hour recharge
+ Keyless Jacobs chuck
+ Feels Sturdy
+ Dual Range Gearing for low speed, high torque vs high speed, low torque
+ Easily switched in/out batter packs
+ CORDLESS
Negatives:
- Heavy -- But that's what you get for better quality
- There are two slots for holding short bits but they are tight and it is difficult to remove the bit
- There is a slight burning smell occasionally but it still continues to drill and power on through
- After using this for over a year the batteries definitely appear to be holding less charge. BUT THEY GIVE YOU TWO!
- The carrying case, although durable, it's very confusing. They need to have a picture of where things go or not have random curves in the plastic on the inside.
- It would be nice if the case had an area to store drill/screw bits
Overall:
* I have found this adjustable cordless drill to function as it is supposed to. It has excellent torque, the features work well, and has been sturdy and durable over the past year. I have used Makita power tools which are also excellent and find these two to be fairly equivalent.
* It appears to have a power stop of some sort after you let go of the button which is nice.
* I admit I'm a home do-it-yourselfer and not a professional carpenter but I think you will be pleased with this product. You'll get your work done, drill holes, tighten/loosen screws, etc. And, if you can get a good price it'll even make you happier! I bought it from Home Depot for around $200 - $10% discount coupon I had.
*** Brief Update 2/26/06 ***
I have now owned the DeWalt 14.4V Power Drill for approximately 3+ years. It continues to work as well as it did when I first purchased it with the exception that the batteries do not appear to stay charged as long. Still, it came with two batteries so I simply just switch them out. It's been dependable, solid, and I am still happy with my purchase!
