| theoldmandave's Full Review: DeWalt 18 Volt Drill Kit DW929K-2 |
In my opinion this drill blows all competition out of the water. I got one from Amazon.com with a $25 off deal in the Tool Crib catalog. The final price was $174.99 with no tax or shipping costs.
We went through about 4 of the 12-volt Dewalt drills in an 8 year period with some pretty heavy use but some of the batteries weren't carrying any charge anymore. We decide to get with the times and upgrade to 18 volts. The ratcheting chuck is very nice and the ability to accept a 1/2" shaft is very handy. The way the battery runs at full strength until the last 10 seconds is very cool, instead of the steady weakening on older models. The one hour charger usually charges a drained battery in less than an hour. We got the case with the metal hinges and the extra space inside for frequently used bits, which is so much better than some of the all plastic cases that have no spare room inside for a single accesory.
Many of our customers help out with little projects like disassembling cabinets and such and they use their own drills. Some of the ones I've seen are either very weak in the torque department, or very slow with the rpms. DeWalts 2 speed transmission work very well for both hole drilling and screw driving, and there forward/reverse selection method is my favorite among all the cordless and corded drills I've tested.
We plan on getting another DeWalt 18-volt drill because no one wants to use the relatively under-powered 12-volts drills anymore. Eventually we would like to pick up a compatible 18-volt jigsaw and reciprocating saw, but the sets are a little too much for a single hit on our budget.
We also have the first generation DeWalt Radio/Charger which I will review later, and the only problem we've experienced with DeWalt products is the extreme fragility of the bulbs on the 18-volt flexible flashlight. For everyhing else, I haven't got a single complaint.
