You Know More Than You Think You Do about Eagles of Death Metal. You may have never heard the name Eagles of Death Metal before in your life, but you have more than likely heard their music. Their songs have been played on commercials for Comcast, Payless ShoeSource, Nissan Motors, Budweiser, Pontiac Motors, and Wendys. They have no problems with loaning their high energy music for these advertisements.
The Name gives the impression that they either sound like an uncontrollable fury of music that is death metal or a classic rock sound like The Eagles. But Eagles of Death Metal are neither of these sounds. It is hard to classify Eagles of Death Metal, they are more of a garage rock and alternative rock mix. Josh Homme, the bands drummer gives the best summary of their sound. He says, ""bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals"
The Story Behind the Name takes place in the back of a Volkswagen with Josh Homme, Jesse Hughes, the two front men of Eagles of Death Metal, and an unnamed friend of theirs who was really into death metal. The unnamed friend played one of the band Poison’s songs, and Josh Homme said, "Dude, that’s not death metal. That’s like the Eagles of death metal."
The Highs for Death By Sexy would have to be the fact that they were able to change their sound from the first on and still be able to keep their high energy which is their best feature. Also they added a bass guitar on this CD which was not on their debut album. This gives the Eagles of Death Metal another tool to add to their songs. The bass lines are used very effectively to help make the songs alive and moving. The guitar is different than the first CD, but still has that exciting edge.
The Lows for Death By Sexy would have to be a lack of consistency. The first album was packed with fun and exciting music from the first song to the last one. Also on Death by Sexy they stuck with many of the same ideas for the flow of the CD. On Peace, Love, and Death Metal they left the CD a little ruff to show that they recorded it in 3 days. There was talking at the end of songs and such. On Death by Sexy they also did this approach which I think that they could have done with out. Also on the second CD there are some songs that seem to more for the bands personal enjoyment rather than the audience such as The Ballad of Queen Bee and Baby Duck.
The Members of Eagles of Death Metal first CD, Peace, Love, and Death Metal were Josh Homme on drums, Jesse Hughes on Guitar and vocals, and Timmy VanHamel also on guitar. Death By Sexy Features many more members all of who are close friends of Jesse and Josh. The primary members are Jesse Hughes, Josh Homme, Samantha Maloney, Dave Catching, Gene Trautmann, Brian O'Connor. There are many other members who also contribute to the band including but not limited to Dave Grohl, Brody Dalle, Joey Castillo, and Jack Black.
The Songs-
I Want You So Hard is a grade A song that opens with an upbeat guitar riff and heavy drum beat. This song was the first single off the CD and definitely deserves to be because it packs a punch. It contains Jesse energetic vocals along with another lower pitch voice that briefly appears here and there when the guitar cuts out leaving the drums.
Don’t Speak is definitely the greatest song on the CD. It contains the same fury and excitement of I Want You So Hard. It showcases Jesse song writing talents and definitely has that great flow and vibe that shows through the entire album. Don’t Speak cuts out about half way through and you think it is over, but they jump back in and make a bang.
I Gotta Feeling uses the guitar and drums more as backing than in the fore ground like I Want You So Hard and Don’t Speak. It focuses even more on Jesse Hughes’s vocals than anything else. The entire CD is supposed to make you boogie and this song definitely would be a prime example of that.
Cherry Cola rounds out the best songs for this CD. This song uses not only Jesse Hugh’s vocals, but also vocals from a female singer. This song effectively combines all the elements used in Don’t Speak and I Gotta Felling to create a fragrant sound that is easy to listen to, but also exciting.
All of these songs are on the first half of CD which makes the CD very lopsided. The first half is much better than the second. The first half is all the upbeat songs while the second half is mostly all the slower songs.
Who Is It For? This CD is definitely for anyone who likes upbeat music. All of the songs are fun and exciting. If I had to put an age range on it would probably be teens to twenties.
