The Bottom Line: The point of an electric can opener is to make opening cans quicker and easier than doing it by hand. Unfortunately, this opener doesn't do that at all.

My husband and I purchased this can opener expecting the usual good quality we've come to expect from Black and Decker. Unfortunately, they've missed their mark this time.
I've been a lifelong user of electric can openers, but I've never had one that was as difficult to use as this one. The can has to be placed exactly so under the blade, or it won't 'catch.' It sometimes takes 3 or 4 tries to get it in the right spot. The easiest way to see where you're positioning the can is to lift the lever as high as possible so you can see where the blade is. However, that causes another problem: The lever/blade is removable for easy cleaning. To remove it, you lift the lever to line up its 'slots' with the 'tabs' on the base. So, in lifting the lever to see where you're positioning the can, you will most likely accidentally remove the lever. More times than not, I've thrown up my hands in defeat and rummaged through the junk drawer for ye old hand crank opener to use instead.
Additionally, I have yet to have opened a can with the B&D without having the label wind up in shreds on my counter (and usually in the can, too.) I think this is caused by poor positioning of the blade and the gear that turns the can. Either that, or my can opener was a paper shredder in a former life.
As others have mentioned, it also tends to slop liquid out of the can when it stops. I've experienced this with every can opener I've owned, but the B&D seems to do it more than others. I must say, though, my kitties were super friendly after the opener doused me in tuna juice one day!
As soon as I can get another can opener without my husband saying 'I told you so' (I picked out this one), I'm planning on chucking it.
