Naomi7835's Full Review: Black&Decker Extra - Tall Can Opener
First of all I have to tell you that I have had good luck with a lot of Black&Decker appliances over the past years. Only one Black&Decker Under the Cabinet Space Maker can opener, that I had a few years ago did not work right from the day I purchased it. So rather then go out and buy another can opener I went out and purchased one of those cheap hand held can openers, which I've been using ever since. But now I do have a little arthritis in my hands, and it makes it hard to turn the can opener with my hand especially opening the large Folgers coffee cans. So I finally decided it was time to get a new electric can opener. After looking in several stores last week, I finally found a Black&Decker Extra Tall Can Opener at Wal-Mart for $14.43. Considering it was an Extra Tall can opener, I knew it would be great for opening our big Folgers Coffee cans and well worth a try to buy it. Thinking how nice it would be not to have to crank open those big coffee cans by hand anymore.
When I got home I opened the box and took out the can opener. The blade assembly was packed separately in a cardboard insert. In order To attach the blade assembly to the can opener I had to line up the key tabs with the key slots, and then push the blade assembly in and turn it until it locked into position. That was easy enough to do.
Features of the Can Opener:
1)--It comes with an easy touch non-slip auto-off soft touch control lever.
2)--It has a cord storage area that is located on the bottom of the can opener, where the cord can be inserted through a notch for easy storing when not in use.
3)--Comes equipped with a handy knife sharpener that has a slot that is slanted for left or right handed use.
4)--The blade assembly is removable and will pop out easily for easy cleaning.
5)--There is a magnet that holds the lids after the can has been opened. But cans with aluminum lids will not stick to the magnet.
6)--Comes with a full year warranty.
7)--It has a nice tall sleek design:
Opening cans:
Opening cans with the Black&Decker Extra Tall can opener is real easy. You just lift the lever and tip the can so that the rim is under the post. Then push down on the lever, making sure the cutter blade is inside the rim. You don't have to hold the lever down while opening the can. It will automatically turn the can and open it. Once the can is opened the can opener will automatically stop.
To remove the can, hold the can with one hand and raise the lever with the other hand. When removing the lid from the magnet to discard, be careful, the lid along with the rim of the can can become very sharp.
I noticed every now and then, after a can had opened there would be a little spilling of liquid from the can onto the counter. So every time I use the can opener I always fold a paper towel and lay it under the can opener. I have had other can openers that have done this also, so this really doesn't bother me.
Sharpening Knives:
After I had the can opener for a few days, my husband finally showed me how to sharpen my knives. I found it very easy to do. Before sharpening the knives you should always make sure that your knives are clean and dry.
First you place the entire blade length into the slot using one continuous stroke, and carefully pull the blade through the slot and slightly up toward you. If the knife is really dull, like a few of mine were, you may have to repeat this a couple of times to get the desired sharpness. All of my knives are perfectly sharpened now. I can slice a tomato so thin that the light will shine through it.
You should never sharpen any serrated blades, as this will really smooth their edges.
The Black&Decker Extra Tall Can Opener will not open any cans with a pull tab, cans with a rolling key, or any rimless cans. Cans with heavy seams, or uneven rims may cause the can opener to stall. This happened to me a few times. What I did was, I just turned the can slightly with my hand. That seemed to help the cutting action to completely open the can.
I did however find that when I opened my big can of Folgers coffee, I had to hold the can opener body while opening the can. If you have heavy cans you will have to do this too.
Cleaning:
Before you clean or assemble the can opener always unplug it first.
To clean the blade assembly, lift the lever up and pull the blade assembly out. The blade assembly can now be washed by hand in hot soapy water, rinsed and wiped off. I prefer to wipe off the blade assembly with a sponge that is slightly damp. Then let it dry thoroughly before attaching it back into the can opener. One thing though it's not dishwasher safe.
Before I replace the blade assembly back on, I always wipe off the body of the can opener, and also the area around the wheel with a damp sponge also.
The Black&Decker can opener will open large and tall cans from small tuna fish cans to many over-sized cans, like my Folgers coffee can, along with some of those tall juice cans. It's designed to handle these very nicely.
It comes in a white or black color. I chose white because it matches nicely with a few of my white appliances that sit on my counter.
So far I'm very happy with my Black&Decker Extra Tall can opener. And no more stress on my hands anymore since my new can opener came into my home. My hands feel a lot better now that I don't have to use that Hand held can opener.
This Black&Decker Extra Tall Can Opener would make a nice gift for anyone. So if your ever in need of a gift to give someone, consider this Black@Decker Extra Tall Can Opener.
