| egabe's Full Review: Kevin F. McMurray - Deep Descent: Adventure and De... |
If you are a scuba diver who is researching shipwrecks, it doesn't take long for you to learn that diving the "Andrea Doria" is considered the Mt. Everest of the underwater world. Kevin F. McMurray's book "Deep Descent" takes the reader (diver or not) into the elite and dangerous world of those who have dared descend to her ghostly hull.
The Doria, as divers know her, is located beyond the recreational limits of basic scuba diving. Only the most experienced and determined divers are able to secure a charter boat to the Doria, and to date, twelve divers have perished trying to see her. Even with advanced technical equipment and training, it takes a person with special skills to make it to the wreck. At 180 to 240 feet deep, the dive to the Andrea Doria can be extremely hazardous.
The Doria has an allure that draws the wreck diving community to her. In her day, she was one of the queens of the seas: an Italian ocean liner of the most luxurious and prestigious comportment. When she tragically collided with another ship and sank in 1956 off the New England coast, the world took note.
Kevin McMurray, an experienced diver and writer, chronicles the experiences of some of the most colorful men and women who have been to see the Doria. Some have died on their first trip to see the ship; others have made hundreds of dives into her hull and have recovered china and other relics from the wreck. Mr. McMurray's writing style is intense and exciting. One need not be a scuba diver to understand the concepts, hazards, and descriptions that he presents, but those who are certified divers will especially appreciate this literary trip to the Doria. Mr. McMurray's book is also especially valuable because he conducted firsthand interviews with many of the "key players" who have had the most experience with the Doria.
This book is a must read for those who are interested in the sea, adventure, scuba diving, and shipwrecks.
