| beerfly's Full Review: Degroen's Rauchbock |
Simply the best new American beer I've had in two years. I first had DeGroen's Rauchbock at the GABF Road Show in Baltimore. The best American smoke beers were there; Rogue Smoke and Alaskan Smoked Porter. I do not lean on local pride when I tell you that the DeGroen's Rauchbock blew them away. I was standing around the DeGroen's tap with a bunch of brewers, all of us commenting on how great this beer was.
This beer starts big, with a bock formula that DeGroen's does well already. You can taste that, feel its body in your mouth. But when the smoked malt is added to the picture, you have a robusto of a beer, a beer with more flavor than found in a case of most beer. The smoke is mellow in character, like a smoked cheese or Westphalian ham, but there are gobs and gobs of it, a gentle flood.
Just imagine this power-packed beer with barbecue--REAL barbecue, not meat with sauce on it, slow-cooked over a smoky hickory fire... Well, that's it: I'm drooling. It's out in 12 oz. bottles, and making its way into New Jersey. This is a great lunchtime beer, one's just enough for a big rare burger or a cheesesteak. It's a beer that was made for meat and cheese, but I've grown to like it alone, too.
If you're looking for something truly different, this is it. Compares well to the German classics like Schlenkerla.

About Me: One bourbon, one Scotch, one beer, eh? I'll take Kentucky Spirit, Scapa, and HopDevil.
