I got this computer in late August 2008 to replace my Toshiba Satellite which had failed. I was on a fairly tight budget so I couldn't get a laptop with all the bells and whistles. So I chose the Inspiron 1420.
Its 250 GB hard drive and 3 GB of random access memory are sufficient for me. As are the four USB ports. It supports 5.1 channel audio out as well, which is a plus for when I'm listening to music (I strongly recommend the use of headphones or external speakers with this computer, as the two 2 watt laptop speakers are very weak and produce no bass whatsoever). It's an all around good computer that does what it needs to do, although it tends to be a bit slow at startup. The Webcam sometimes goes on and off by itself, and to stop this I have to disable the driver. Not too big of a deal though.
The computer is pretty lightweight and thin, and as thus can be transported fairly easily. I can even hold it in one hand as long as I'm careful not to drop it. The power cord does slide out fairly easily, being just a coaxial circular shaped connection, and it often has trouble determining the charger wattage. The batteries do last quite awhile as long as I have the screen brightness turned down and am not using many accessories (WiFi, DVD±R/RW drive, etc.).
This is not the best computer out there, but it's pretty good. It does what it needs to do, and that's all I ask of it.
