Alok's Full Review: Dell Inspiron mini 10 - Black, Intel Atom Processo...
I was completely taken in by the most recent Dell Mini commercial where the laptops are wrapped up to look like candy. After some research, I did order myself a "Jade Green" netbook. I was excited to receive it when it arrived in the mail about 10 days later (with an external DVD drive). For clarity I dhad ordered the Dell Inspiron 1010 with the Intel Atom Processor Z530, 1.6GHz, 533 MGzFSB, 512K L2 Cache, 1GB Ram and a 160GB 2.5inch, 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive. This configuration (along with the external CD/DVD drive cost me about $700. As soon as I opened it up, I thought that the order may be incorrect as my netbook was RED and not the Jade that I was anticipating. Regardless, I decided in a matter of seconds that I could live with this and dived into the laptop. Following the instructions, I let the equipment charge for 12 hours overnight and then went into working with it the next day. Suffice to say, I did NOT get what I expected. The computer screen was small (yes I had wanted a small netbook), but the resolution was horrible. Upon startup, the screen had a font and blue background reminiscent of the the computers from the 80s. Not a good feeling especially with all the new fonts and technology out there. I still had faith so I connected wirelessly to the internet and then just came to a big halt. The netbook was slow, very slow. I tried to move closer to the wireless device, let it "warm up" and performed other superstitious moves to allow for any human error to be cleared. After about 20 minutes I realized that I did not want this netbook. I kept it for two more days. I loved the fact that it was so light, that I could carry it around without even feeling like I was holding on to something, but this at the same time was not comforting. This netbook is made of plastic, and it is palpable. At $700 for the entire system, the Dell Mini 1010 was just not doing it for me. Even the closure of the screen was just a closure and not a securing to the base (as with most laptops). They keyboard, although it is full-function is just too small. I am a pretty good typist and found myself using the backspace too much as I was using the machine. i have average sized hands but this made me feel like I was typing on a toy laptop instead of a mini netbook. Also, the mouse was not user friendly. It would stick and I was constantly "searching " for it on the screen. Suffice, to say I was thoroughly disappointed. I called Dell and told them that I wanted to return the machine and was forced to pay a $75 restocking fee to have the item returned. I told them that I was not happy with the performance and that I would probably buy another, larger Dell Machine, but since I didn't know exactly at the time what I wanted, they did not help me out at all. Also, the return process was a HUGE run around. There was no one to help with the return process readily. I had to try for a few days as I kept getting cut off. I even called the salesperson who sold me the laptop and asked him for help. He was kind and gave me the same number I'd tried four times already. I finally got to a person after 2 days of trying. I had 21 days to return the laptop and it went back after 1 week in my home. I was disappointed that Dell makes it so easy to purchase, but so difficult to return a product. The customer service individual did not even know the email or phone number of the complaints and compliments department at Dell (or was not willing to share it with me).
