About six months ago I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with 894 MB RAM and Windows Vista. While the price was reasonable (around $600), I am utterly disappointed with the performance of this machine.
For a while, the machine crashed almost every time it was started after it was in "hibernate" mode. A new video driver finally fixed that.
However, my browser (Firefox) often hangs and the boot process can take up to five minutes. Last night, after an automatic Windows Update, the machine rebooted itself twice and took at least 20 minutes to do so.
My family owns three other Dell computers, all with XP, and we have found them to be okay (two of the hard drives crashed and had to be replaced within the warranty period). Unfortunately, either the 1501 is not capable of running Vista or Vista is simply an awful operating system -- I am not sure which. But in either case, I am hugely disappointed. Even at the low price point, this laptop is not worth the money.
