Pros:Small; powerful; thoughtful rubber strap to keep things tidy
The Bottom Line: This is a good, well-designed laptop power supply. It's small, powerful and packs easily.
I walked back to my desk at work the other day and found one of the corporate IT people looking balefully at the now-ancient Toshiba Tecra M2 laptop computer that my employer issued to me about 2.5 years ago. The Tecra M2 was a little behind the curve when I got it and only got behinder as the months went by. The IT tech said it was my turn to get a new computer, and I was soon fitted with a shiny new Dell D620 with a few of the bells and most of the whistles.

One of the accessories that came with the D620 is a power supply, which can power either the D620 directly or can power the laptop's docking station, which in turn can power the laptop. According to the label on the power supply, its model number is HA65NS1-00.
What it is
The Dell HA65NS1-00 is a typical computer power supply encased in hard black plastic. There's a big label with lots of tiny writing on one side and a Dell logo engraved into the plastic on the other side. The underside of the power supply (the side where the label is) is slightly concave and the ends are rounded. One end has a jack into which the six-foot-long ungrounded AC power cord is inserted; issuing from the other end is a six-foot-long cable that supplies power to a connector on the computer. Attached to one side is an elastic rubber strap that's used to keep the cables neat and tidy.
The overall size of this power supply is about 5.5 inches long by 2.25 inches wide by one inch thick. As laptop power supplies go, it's a little on the small side. However, it sports a sizable power rating: 19.5 Volts at 3.34 Amps. That's a solid amount of power for such a small power supply. The unit can handle any international power standard from 100-240V and 50/60 Hz, so it would be good for travel. You will need an inexpensive adapter to convert the US-standard AC plug to whatever country you're in, but these adapters are cheap.
This Dell power supply costs $49 one online vendor. Office supply stores such as Staples sell a universal replacement that is more expensive. A Targus universal replacement I priced at Staples costs $79. I believe that this Dell power supply will power any of Dell's Latitude "D" series of computers, but check with the company's Web site before you buy.
It's no great technical feat to use the Dell HA65NS1-00 with my D620 computer -- just plug the AC power cord into an electrical outlet, then plug the other power connector into the power port on the computer. There are no lights or any other indication that the power supply is working, although the computer will show that it's on line power (as opposed to battery power) once it is booted.
This power supply has enough juice to power the computer while charging the battery, and it doesn't break much of a sweat doing it. The HA65NS1-00 gets only a little warm after running the computer for hours. I seldom run my laptop on battery power for more than a few minutes. After one of these battery-powered spells, this supply restores the battery to full charge in 30 minutes or so. I estimate that a complete re-charge will take 6-8 hours.
The HA65NS1-00 power supply and its various components feel like good quality devices. I also like the rubber strap used to keep the wires neat, which is a better system than the Velcro strap used on Toshiba power supplies. (The Velcro strap always tangles and gets stuck on itself.) The rounded ends of this power supply are noteworthy too, since they don't have pointy corners that dig into other items jammed into a briefcase.
I like the Dell HA65NS1-00. It is small, powerful, seems well built and has a thoughtful design for something as prosaic as a laptop power supply. It will not bring peace or cure cancer in our lifetime, but it does its mundane power-supplying job with good design and a hint of elegance.
I recommend the Dell HA65NS1-00 laptop power supply.
