Pros: Ambient light sensor, lid hinge tightening screws easily accessible,
Cons: Bad thermal design, no active shock protection for HDD, most connectors are on the back.
The Bottom Line: Get a mac if you can.

| snmishra's Full Review: Dell Latitude⢠D620 (D620SINGLE) PC Notebook |
Laptops are commodities when it comes to the electronics inside. What
sets the good ones apart are extra features and design. The Dell has
some nice touches. There is an ambient light sensor that adjusts the
display brightness automatically. The trackpoint can be used as a
scroller (it's terribly inaccurate as pointing device, no idea why
they configure it as a mouse by default).
Dell D620 has bad thermal design. The fan blows out the bottom. So you
can't place it on a table and one's lap gets hot pretty quick. Don't
buy a laptop with discrete graphics card. nVidia and ATI don't seem to
take power consumption into consideration in their designs.
Also missing on the Dell are active shock protection for
hard-drives. The touchpad is OK, but is smaller than I would
like. It's missing a third touchpad button (which only Lenovo seems to
have).
The LED battery indicator on the hinge only warns at 5% battery
life, by which time one gets 30 seconds to shut down and we all know
how fast Windows is at shutting down.
Most of the connectors are placed at the back of the laptop, making
them hard to get at.
Dell is weak on support software as well. There are no automatic
driver and software updates. The DVD playing software supplied was
obsolete and doesn't work on Vista (and the update didn't work on
Vista either).
