Pros: installation simple, illustrated instructions on box and cartridge, shipping label included to recycle
Cons: no written installation instructions (all pictures)
Our Dell printer goes through black ink almost as fast as someone can blink. Okaaaaayyyy … slight exaggeration. But the toner disappears way too fast, which is why once again I had to change the Dell PF028 Black Toner Cartridge.
The toner cartridge is the Dell brand and comes in a plain brown cardboard box. The toner cartridge is sealed in a plastic envelope. Even though no written instructions are in the package, there are “picture” instructions outside the cardboard box and on the toner cartridge. Also in the box is a return shipping label to recycle the used cartridge.
This cartridge is designed to fit 3110cn and 3115cn Dell printers. It is promoted as printing 5,000 pages with 5-percent ink coverage.
We are using the Dell 3115cn multi-function printer. This printer likes to complain. It rapidly beeps when it needs paper. When the paper tray is opened, it beeps to notify that the tray has been opened. The machine also beeps when it detects one of the four toner cartridges is near empty. The beeping usually begins when a cartridge has 25-percent toner remaining. All that beeping is irritating. Since I refuse to buckle to the repeated beeps (no way am I changing a toner cartridge that is only 75-percent empty!) … I endure until the cartridge is near exhausted.
Out of the four cartridges in the printer, the black is always the first to disappear. It’s a good thing these cartridges are simple to remove and replace.
First, I press the round button on the right side of the printer. This unlocks a front panel on the machine. Open the panel to see the vertical alignment of the four cartridges. The black cartridge is the first one at the top. There is a small handle on each side to grasp. Carefully, pull out the old black cartridge.
Keep the new cartridge in its sealed bag and rock it back and forth to shake the toner. Then open the bag to remove the cartridge. Important: Keep the orange plastic shield on the cartridge in place. There is a plastic strip that needs to be pulled out of the cartridge (on one of the short sides). Pull the strip straight out so that it doesn’t break.
Insert the new toner cartridge into the slot where the old cartridge was removed. The cartridge is installed with the label print face up. Securely push the cartridge in place. Now is the time to remove the orange plastic piece. This “sleeve” has been protecting the cartridge drum from exposure to bright light. Once the orange plastic is removed, shut the front panel.
Now you are ready to print again. This Dell toner cartridge delivers nice black ink. We have never had a problem with one leaking. These toner cartridges are quality-made. Conveniently placed in the cartridge box is a shipping label so that the old toner cartridge can be returned. Alternatively, take the cartridge into Staples and receive $2.00 in Staples Rewards money for recycling it.
I bought this cartridge from Staples Advantage online for $80.71. Staples.com sells it for $85.99.
These Dell PF028 Black Toner Cartridges work well for us. Despite the lack of written instructions, the illustrations are easy to follow. Once you’ve installed one cartridge, the process is routine.
