| opinionated3's Full Review: Dell UltraSharp 1908WFP 19inch Black Widescreen Wi... |
It looks like the love affair with the wide screen TV's has hit the computer industry, Dell is packaging many of their new computer workstations with 19" widescreen monitors to help entice businesses and consumers to chose them over all the other manufacturers. I lead the Computer Support Team at the company I work at and we are responsible for more than 400 workstations and printers in 7 buildings. We recently purchased several high end Dell Precision workstations and they came with Dell UltraSharp 1908WFP 19" flat panel monitors. When I opened the box and started pulling all of the contents out of the box I got my first look at this huge monitor. Dell packaged the monitor panel and base separate and I had to slip the mounting plate attached to the base into the opening in the back of monitor panel and it snapped into place. There is a button just below where the mount popped into plate to allow you to remove the panel from the base in case you want to attach the panel to a wall mount. This ability came in handy on one occasion when we needed to mount one of these monitors on a swivel arm mount for a special application. Packed in the box along with the monitor panel and the base was a standard SVGA 15pin video cable, DVI video cable, power cord and CD with driver. Dell also packed a large full color poster that has step-by-step instructions on how to setup the monitor, this is a Dell standard.
Appearance
The monitor is pretty plain looking, but looks are deceiving, Dell packs this monitor with several bells and whistles that make it a great choice for our graphic artists. It has a swivel base that raises and lowers to adjust to an individual's preferences. It also has two USB ports built-in to the left side of the monitor for easy access to additional USB devices. Besides the swivel base, this monitor will tilt up or down and it swivel to a vertical position.
With its 1000:1 contrast ratio and 300 cd/m2 the images on the screen are extremely bright and very crisp. Our artists loves these monitors and we will be using these from now on for all their workstations. The overall size of this monitor is not too bad; 17.43" W x 13.3" H x 7.38" D and weighs a little over 10 pounds.
Setup
The monitor is neatly packed in a compact box with the base and monitor panel separately packed in foam inserts. The monitor panel pops into place on the height adjustable base and there is button on the back to release it from the mount for easy removal. Dell packs the monitor with the SVGA cable attached to the back of the panel, but if you want to use the DVI cable it is packed inside the box. You will also find a USB cable inside the box to plug into the back of the monitor so you can use any of the four USB ports on the monitor. The monitor can display a wide range of resolutions depending on the settings of your video card, but the native resolution is 1440 x 900. If you select any other setting you will notice a degradation of the screen quality.
The 1908 UltraSharp Widescreen monitor has a built-in OSD (Onscreen Display) menu that gives you control of the settings of the monitor and you can either manually change the settings or you can chose the automatic adjustment and it will do it for you.
My Final Thoughts
I have heard nothing but great things about this monitor ever since I setup the very first one a few months ago and I have to agree that it is one heck of a sweet monitor. One of the reasons we love this monitor so much is that it makes all of the artwork our graphic artists create look so great. The Dell UltraSharp lines of flat panel monitors are fantastic. The colors just seem to jump out at you when looking at them.
After setting up several of these monitors for our artists I just had to get one for myself. It is a truly a great monitor; with its widescreen, I have plenty of screen real estate to have multiple windows open at the same time. Video playback is great; with its 5ms response time there isn't any ghosting at all.
You cannot go wrong with having one of these monitors on your desk, it enhances the experience of any type of work you do. I would highly recommend the Dell Ultrasharp 1908WFP monitor to everyone and you will not be disappointed.
