Recently, a friend of mine introduced me to the world of XM Radio. I thought that it was very cool that you could listen to a wide variety of music without having to listen to ads for such things as cars and bars. With that in mind, I went over to Best Buy and bought a Delphi Roady XT Portable XM Radio Receiver.
What attracted me to the Roady XT was its size and cost. I bought it for only 80 dollars. Don't forget that there is an activation charge and the subscription to XM is $12.95 per month. It is completely push-button and you can have up to 30 preset stations. If you don't like the color of the background, there are several other color choices. You can pick whatever floats your boat. The display also tells you what artist and song you are listening to, but there are several different ways to configure what it tells you.
It is relatively easy to install. There are also several ways to listen to the Radio in your car. You can use FM Modulation by listening to it through a specific FM frequency, which you can set. Secondy, you can buy a separate FM adapter to wire directly to your radio, though I'm not sure what kind of radio units that will work on. Finally, the Roady XT comes with a cassette adapter that you can use if you have a tape deck. The manual says this is the best way to use your Roady XT in terms of sound quality. I have used FM modulation and depending on where you live, you might still get a little interference from other FM station. If you have a cassette player, use the adapter.
If there are any downsides to the Roady XT, it would have to be the mount that comes with it. It has adhesive on there so you can mount it to your dash, but finding a perfect place to mount it can be a difficult task. As of right now, I'm still trying to figure out where to mount it without it becoming an obstruction to anything or anybody. Also, I had to exchange the first one I bought since the antenna jack was having problems. The one I got after the exchange, however, works just fine.
One thing is for sure, the Roady XT is one of the best things to have for a road trip. I recently had to make a day trip to west Texas and it was nice to listen to music and not have it break up at all. As long as you are not in a long tunnel or anything that will block the signal, you will be in XM Heaven.
