bowflexuser's Full Review: Delphi Roady XT XM Radio Receiver
Simple, easy, and very streamlined in appearance. All of these things attributed to my decision to get the Roady XT for XM radio.
I've wanted XM for years, but just now we're able to justify spending money for radio in my car. We live in an area where there really is no good FM or AM radio reception. Enter the Roady XT.
Some people choose to do the self install method. While this appeared very simple and easy to do, I chose to to have it professionally installed because I don't really like to fool around with taking parts off the car to bury wires. I'd rather let someone else do that.
After having the install done initially in my old 98 Ford Explorer with an aftermarket radio, I was very impressed. For that car, I had the power source hardwired into the car for a continuous power supply, and for the sake of having the wires not dangling down from the radio. More importantly, however, I had the XT directly plugged into some RCA outputs in the back of the after market radio, so I could use the source button on the front of the radio to change from CD, to Radio, and then to aux. input so I could have what some say is the best connection. The direct line worked okay, but there was a terrible hissing noise that I couldn't correct.
When I bought my new car, I just used the provided FM Modulator, along with a Delphi FM Adapater to provide my service. I am much happier now with that decision. I still have it hardwired in, but now it is FM Modulated. With the Direct FM Adapater, it pulls in the XM service before the FM airwaves.
But enough about that, on to the functions of the XT:
It comes with a built in FM Modulator, although I hear some of the newer ones are having problems with theirs. That is why I went ahead and bought the FM Direct Adapter. The Modulator spans the entire frequency range on your radio, so you'll always be able to find a station.
The buttons on the XT are pretty small. If you have bigger finger tips, sometimes you mash the wrong numbers. There are all sorts of things you can do with the XT, such as having a stock ticker, sports ticker, display the channel and song, channel and artist, or artist and song.
You are also able to change the background color, I believe from 4 or 5 choices. I found that I like the cool blue color the best.
The presets are a bit of a pain but also really neat. They are a pain because you have to hit a button to get to the presets, and then shuffle through that button for your first, second or third set of presets for a total of 30 presets. However, if you're like me, I really have about 10 stations I listen to regularly, and I usually just keep it set on Preset A.
The XT, professionally installed in my car, looks like it belongs there. It doesn't look like some some sort of gaudy after market device suctioned to the windshield or drilled into the dash. For that reason alone, I would recommend the XT.
It is also very easy to unplug from your car, and take inside to listen to on a home kit or portable stereo for XM.
Really and truly, bottom line, it really comes down to a preference of looks for which receiver you pick for XM service. They are all going to provide you with wonderful quality service.
