paman's Full Review: Delphi SKYFi3 XM Radio Receiver with Car Kit
I bought an XM receiver two months ago to enjoy during my nearly one-hour commuting time.
The reasons were three-fold: a) Several programs I enjoy listening to (Dave Ramsey and Sean Hannity) are tape-delayed here in the San Antonio market, b) all talk radio and most other stations here in San Antonio have gone to a mandatory one-minute commercial format with LOTS of commercials, and c) the San Antonio market (like many other cities) is so racially-diverse, the formatting is very bland as they try to reach every age and race.
XM seemed to be the answer to all those problems. The shows I wanted were (emphasis on WERE) carried live on SM, many satellite programs play music during those LOOOONG breaks when local stations sell time, and I could listed to exactly the types of music I like, many without interruption.
Unfortunately, XM decided to drop two of the three hours of the Dave Ramsey program, and carry the Dr. Laura show.
Now, you may like the Dr. Laura show, but it is hardly a similar program to the Dave Ramsey show. If you haven't heard Dr. Laura, it is basically people calling in, mostly whining, some with real problems, asking Dr. L for her opinion. Most of the time, I don't relate to "my mother/father/husband/wife/friend/kids don't like me, what do I do?"
Dave Ramsey's program is about saving money and spending money wisely, with the ultimate goal of getting totally out of debt, building wealth and giving to the church or charity of your choice. With the average American family carrying about $38,000 in credit card debt, that would seem to appeal to a larger audience than someone whining or b*tching about someone else.
As a result, I dropped XM programming and will soon by a SIRIUS receiver.
Why drop XM radio? Simple. Satellite radio has many unused channels. Finding a place for BOTH shows would be easy, IF they really wanted to. However, when someone promises a service and I buy that service, only to have the service change, that is at least a breach of trust and a violation to the terms of our agreement.
I will not support a company that promises "A" and later chooses to deliver "B", telling me it is just as good as the other one.
