Logimom asked us to humor her and join a W/O, asking us to enter a review in a category we have never or seldom write in. I asked her to suggest a category to me. She came up with toys. Having only done three items there, and wanting to spread my wings a bit in that category, I came up with a board game that is perfect for ages 8 and up and is one of the best games for laughs and good times that our family has played over the years.
Please read about it.
DELUXE ENCORE
INTRODUCTION
My family loves games. Over the years we have played many different kinds. This one is tops! It's made by a company called ENDLESS Games. The box suggests it's good for those 8 and up. What I like about the game is that you can be very casual about it as far as seating. We have played in close quarters in our dining room and outside in our yard with people sitting and standing all over the place. Each team member just needs to hear the chosen word. From there on it's fun, fun, fun and sing sing sing. There is absolutely no judging on singing quality or expertise. It's just about knowing a song. It's easy, non intimidating and fun.
OBJECT OF THE GAME
Your team, whether there is just one on each team or a hundred, must be able to sing a song with a "word" you are given by the game cards.
Your team or at least any one member of the team must sing at least six words of the song including the given word.
The Endless Game people describe "A song is anything with a tune and words."
An example of play they give is of the word "Magic".
Team one may come up with "Puff, the Magic Dragon lives by the sea ......."
The next team may come up with "Do you believe in Magic in a young girl's heart....."
The word then goes back to the first team who then must find another song with the word "Magic"
This goes on until one team falters. The winning team then, still controlling the die, rolls it and moves ahead a few spaces closer to the "Grand Finale" bar that indicates the winning team.
THE BOX and ALL
This game comes in a small blue coloured box of about 8"X 10". Inside is a board that folds out one time to a 16"x 10" size. The board has ovals that lead to the Grand Finally and are in colour. They also indicate different challenges in the game. I'll explain more in a moment. The first team to get from Start to Grand Finale is the winner.
The game box also includes little markers for each team. You can play this game as several teams, however, we have always just played as two team, no matter how many people we are. It seams to keep everyone in the game and the action moving faster.
You also get a die, game cards, and a twenty second timer.
PLAYING the GAME
The rules of the game have some interesting twists in it. To start the game one team rolls the die and moves the game piece to the proper oval. The oval indicates one of a few options that must be followed. The different words on the ovals are
Category Word Player vs. Player Player vs. Team
Category
If you land on Category you pick up one of the cards and read the category on the bottom of the card. It may say "Number songs 50-100". This means that both team are looking to sing a song that has something to do with the category, Numbers 50-100
Team One may start with "...99 bottles of beer on the wall 99 bottles of...."
Now it goes to team Two. With "Around the world in eighty days...."
Then back to team One and on and on until a team can't get a song. A timer is used to challenge a team to come up with a song in twenty seconds. If they don't the other team controls the die, tosses it, and moves ahead to the next proper oval.
Word
If the oval says "word", and most do, then you go to the next top card flip it over, find the word that is the same colour as the oval. Your team then starts by singing a song with that word in it. The round goes on just the same until one team cannot sing a song with that particular word.
Here are the five words on one particular card. Toe, Magic, Bell, Water, Ring. Can you think of any songs with those words? Hopefully you or a team member can. You will be surprised at how long some rounds can go on.
Player vs. Player
When you land on this one, each team designates one person to play against the opposing teams chosen member. After a few rounds you will know who your stronger players are. Once again a card is flipped over and the corresponding colour is used to choose the word.
Player vs. Team
This can be a tough one on a single person, however, I have seen some people hold their ground a while against a full team. No helping your team mate on this one.
AS THE CURTAIN CLOSES
This game is a lot of fun. If played by the rules it is always challenging. I have found that on occasion, and this has happened a number of times, the game takes on an energy of its own and the people get into big singing groups singing old favorite songs. That's when the fun really begins. One team is drawn to sing a song to its end while the other is struggling to think of another song with the same word. They start shouting "I can't think" and the other team sings that much louder!
Over the years we have played this game with smaller groups and larger ones, with children and with all adults. It's been a laugh riot every time.
I hope you enjoy it too!
