| dgoodin's Full Review: Denon AVR-2802 6.1 Channels Receiver |
This was my first Denon product. I was hesitant about purchasing it until I checked the competition. I looked at the Onkyo 696 and 797. While these seemed like great receivers the sound quality was not as warm. In other words the Denon sounded better to my ears. This receiver sounded even better when I bought a set of Monster cables to hook up everything. What a difference fiber optic sound cable makes!
There is very few things I did not like about the product and they were minor. The remote control seemed big and clunky and I had problems teaching my other remotes. I ended up not using this feature. I liked the remote that came with the 3802 model much better but I did not want to spend the extra 200 dollars.
The DTS-ES (6 channel sound) was very impressive. It is worth it to by the extra rear center channel! The second zone support is nice too. Watching movies like Gladiator is great because it supports 5-channel sound. However, all other movies come out great with 5.1 Dolby.
Other modes of the receiver work great as well. Even the 2-channel stereo sounded great with just two bookshelf speakers. I had used this configuration before I bought my 6-channel surround SpeakerCraft speaker setup. Since this receiver supports Dolby Surround AC3 compatibility my old Laser Discs sound wonderful.
The only thing that did not work as expected via the receiver was the DVD player. I have a Panasonic A115 and it generally works great, the only exception was when I hooked it up to the receiver. The problem was getting no picture. I know it was not the receiver since I hooked up my XBox and it worked great as a DVD player.
