Loveliness Instead of Loneliness: Abbey's Elegy for the Desert

Pros: Cantankerous, meditative, indulgent and inspiring.
Cons: Will it make sense to someone who hasn't already felt it?

Really? Cool. I hope you have some good stories to tell about him.

He had an unusual set of criteria. I met the man (he taught for a while at the University of Arizona during the time I was there). He would probably say OK, just don't settle in--maybe.

That's kind of you.

We could always compare photos in Chicago, like grandparents proud of their sandstone babies, complaining about the ungrateful parents who don't bring them to visit us often enough.

The shame is how rarely I get out myself, as close as I am. My wife tells me that a tent-trailer would increase my chances for family expeditions. What would Abbey say to that? Ah, who cares what the snot would say. He lived in a trailer when he was at Arches, why shouldn't I.

New Mexico is where Abbey got his degree. I'm sure it helped start his love for the desert.

Really? There's always interlibrary loan.

I think I'm much the same as you as you put it in your review--that Abbey's ideas resonate, but at the same time I'd be hard pressed myself to forgo some of the modern conveniences. For instance, I happen to like Arches just fine with its road being paved.

But like Abbey, I wish I could have it all to myself.

Reminding me how much I love the desert, canyons, the Colorado Plateau, the smell, the quiet, Abbey country. Not only have you managed to capture the essence of his book, but also the man. This book is so different from Monkey Wrench Gang, yet both are representative of the man. What am I doing in central Illinois? Beautiful review. You just got my first MH. Thanks, I couldn't think of a better first.

I loved your description. This really gives me a feel for the desert. I used to think that desert=ugly until I lived in New Mexico. I think fondly of my time there and your review brings back some of that wistful feeling.

Nice, and thanks!

I'm having a hard time finding a copy of The Monkey Wrench Gang...or maybe I'm just being lazy. In any case, I loved Desert Solitaire--nice review of what I consider to be Abbey's apex.
