| kristinafh's Full Review: Designer Spotlight by Katiana Jimenez |
Mattel is a smart organization. They've definitely spent time and money on figuring out how they can keep the little girl in all of us hooked into purchasing more Barbies. How do they do this? They tap into our adult tastes, capitalizing on things like fashion, elegance, and exotic fantasies :).
One of their series that addresses a significant part of the adult collectors is their Designer Spotlight. For this series, they select a well-known designer and allow them to create a Barbie - head to toe - based upon whatever their vision is. Typically, these Barbie's are not something that you'd see little girls with. Rather, you're likely to see grown women stare them and ooooh! and ahhh!.
Katiana Jimenez is one of my very favorite designers. She's known for her just left-of-center designs, unique colors, and bold accessories. Her designer spotlight Barbie is definitely in the top three of the dolls released in the Barbie line for 2003.
Barbie wears an Indian-inspired outfit. The first thing that will draw your attention is her gold, metallic halter. Instead of the usual, vanilla-looking halter-tops we see dolls wearing, Katiana spices this one up by cutting the fabric in a non-traditional way. The right side of the halter-top is high while the left side is 1/3 lower. The cut of the bottom of the halter-top sports a layer of fringe topped off by purple, iridescent beads. It is tied in the back and is pulled up in a way in which you catch a glimpse at her midriff. And yes, there does look like something that might be a belly button.
Barbie's two-toned, eggplant taffeta skirt is magnificently held together around the waist by a gold-tone, metallic hem. Peaking out from the outer skirt is another layer of taffeta in a slightly lighter purple color. There is a gold print that adorns the bottom of the skirt. You almost don't notice it because it's so subtle.
Barbie's raven hair is highlighted with strands of rich auburn hues. It's long, and pulled back to the right side of her head into a casual twist. Her locks which fall gracefully over her shoulders, curl at the end. Chunks of her hair are pulled out from the twist and strategically placed around her face to give off the impression of unpredictable and wild.
Barbie's make-up is daring. Her olive skin-tone is accentuated by subtle, lavender eyeshadow overlayed by a mist of gold glitter. Her lips are outlined in a dark purple while her lips are covered in a shiny, lavender gloss. Barbie's fingernails are neatly manicured and painted purple.
The accessories are extremely unique. To top off the gold reflected in her outfit, Barbie wears gold hoop earrings with gold chunky beads and a wrap-around, arm bracelet.
Barbie comes in a typical, Mattel collector box. It's linen with purple-metallic trim. There's a wide, clear window in the front in which you can view her. On the back is a description about her and of course, Katiana Jimenez. She is sealed off from the rest of the world by Mattel's usual tape.
Barbie is firmly attached to her inner-background of soft lavender. If you happen to take her out of her box for display, she does come with a doll stand. Remember though, if you plan on collecting her for monetary value, it's best that you do not remove those Mattel seals.
If you're interested in purchasing Katiana Jimenez Designer Spotlight Barbie. - you're in luck! She is available through normal, retail establishments, for $49.99. You can also purchase her on eBay.
The End
Although you might consider this doll to be a bit pricey, it is worth every cent. Why do collectors go so gaa-gaa over Designer Spotlight by Katiana Jimenez? It's because the amount of detail and the high quality of workmanship is superior to most dolls on the market - especially in the year 2003.
