Every now and then I suppose most of us has a bout with that horrible situation -- an intestinal virus or what I like to call it, Montezuma's Revenge. After having several incredibly painful defecations it is quite common for a person to develop a raw bottom such as I had a couple of weeks ago.
After recovering from this type of virus, the after effects of rawness and burning are almost as bad as the virus itself. So, if you have a "sit down" job like mine is most of the time, sitting with your bottom in this condition is extremely unbearable to say the least.
The last time that I had this horrible virus chap my bottom, I found immediate relief from a very unlikely source that adults would consider -- Desitin Creamy, a product mostly advertised for a baby's diaper rash.
Application and Use
Without becoming really graphic with the application and use of this product, suffice to say that what you would do with Desitin would be to squeeze the tube of ointment in your hand and then apply to the affected area.
When I did this the last time, I was completely astounded at how quickly the heat of the irritation cooled off and the stinging also diminished greatly within a few minutes.
Within about a half hour I "forgot" that my bottom had this redness and irritation at all because I didn't even feel it! And within a short period of time the condition cleared up much faster than it would have if I would have just left it "alone."
Other Uses
Other than for application on one's irritated bottom, I have found that Desitin Creamy is also effective for under arm irritations from sweating.
My youngest son has a tendency during very hot weather to develop these fire red inflamations underneath his underarms when he sweats too much during the day. By applying this cream to his underarm, I have found that he tolerates wearing shirts better, and it clears up the inflamation much faster than other products.
Drawbacks?
There's mainly two drawbacks to Desitin Creamy that I have noticed.
The first drawback is that it is a cream and it does leave a residue after rubbing it in. When I used this product on my son's underarm rash and he wore a dark color shirt, this product would show on the shirt.
The other drawback to Desitin Creamy is that it is rather slimy. It's hard to get the product off of your hands (in my opinion) unless you use a good anti-bacterial soap. Also, once applied you'll feel like you're sliding a bit when you sit!
These are mostly minor annoyances in my opinion.
Final Summary
Yes, I know that Desitin Creamy is mostly for babies and their diaper rash problems, but let me tell you something -- I am VERY thankful that it works on adult rashes just as well too! This product will continue to be a staple in my home medicine cabinet from now on as it has continued to prove its worth.
