*** update on 4/6/05: I read an article yesterday in the Boston Globe health section that Sodium Borate should not be used on infant skin. I noticed that Sodium Borate is an ingredient in this product.***
ORIGINAL REVIEW
Since I am on my third child, I have had the opportunity to road test a lot of diaper cremes. I personally prefer the ones with little or no scent because that way I truly know what is going on in the diaper.
DAILY USE
I initially used this creme occasionally when baby didn't have a rash just to protect her skin from getting a rash. This creme seemed to work fine for these purposes under normal conditions which include a healthy baby and regular diaper changes. Of course, with a healthy baby and regular diaper changes, we rarely run into diaper rash problems so I can't say the creme has been particularly effective.
Although the packaging claims this product has a "fresh scent" I find there is practically no scent at all. I had used the regular, thick Desitin product on my first born years ago and remember a strong, medicinal scent. I am glad this version of Desitin has almost no scent since I didn't care for the medicinal scent. This creme is also much thinner and easier to apply than the original Desitin I was used to. Desitin creamy comes out more like a thick body lotion rather than a thick paste like other diaper cremes. I usually put on a pretty thick layer - enough so you can't see through the creme to baby's skin. However, I find that, on the next diaper change, the creme is off her skin and all over the diaper. I would definitely prefer a creme that adheres to baby's skin better.
THE BIG TEST: DIAPER RASH
My 5 month old baby had a stomach bug which resulted in lots of poopy diapers which, of course, resulted in a horrible diaper rash. I decided to try this diaper creme on the rash. First of all, baby cried upon application. This surprised me because she didn't cry when I used the baby wipes on the rash during the frequent diaper changes. I thought maybe she was protesting at being on the changing table too long. I (wrongly) assumed the creme would feel soothing on the rash. However, at the second diaper change, she cried again only as I put the creme on. I can only assume the creme stings when applied to diaper rash.
The other disappointment is that the rash actually got worse with this creme so I am assuming it somehow irritated her skin, or, at a minimum, didn't provide any protection. My baby hasn't been sensitive to other products so I think it is just this one in particular that bothered her. I switched to Burts Bees Diaper Ointment and her skin looked better almost immediately. Plus, she didn't cry when I put it on which made me a much happier mommy.
