Who cares how it smells? It works!
Written: Oct 11 '00
Pros:Forms a solid protective barrier, works quickly
Cons:Not a pleasant smell, stays on mommy too
When my oldest daughter was about 7 months old she had a virus that resulted in diarrhea. This really made her bottom sore and red. I had a tube of Johnson's Diaper Rash ointment that I had never had to use before. I began applying it to my daughters bottom but it didn't seem to be helping.
The diaper rash was getting worse. Now it was really raw and bleeding. I called my mom and she said "Well, dear, you need to use Desitin, it is the only one that works. Go get some right now and she will be better by morning". Mother knows best right?
Off I sent my husband to the store to get some Desitin Ointment. It was about 8:00 pm when he got home with the Desitin and I immediately applied it to my daughters bottom. She went to bed shortly after that and when she awoke in the morning it was time for a diaper change and to find out if my mom really did know best.
She was right. The diaper rash was not gone completely, but there was a drastic improvement. I threw out the Johnson's and have been using Desitin faithfully ever since.
What's the cost?
We buy the 2 oz size for about $3.00. We don't have to use it very often, we are lucky that our daughters have never been prone to get diaper rash, so this is a good size for us.
What's it supposed to do?
It is supposed to relieve diaper rash. According to the tube it promotes healing, protects skin, and relieves chaffing.
Does it meet it's claims?
It worked better than I expected. My mom told me my daughters diaper rash would be better by morning, and it was. Honestly, I didn't believe my mom, I thought for sure it wasn't going to work. I figured that all diaper rash ointments were the same, I learned they are not.
How often do you need to use it?
It says to apply three times a day, or more if needed. I have found that Desitin stays on baby's bottom very well. Wet diapers don't seem to take it off and wipes don't take it right off either. It has a nice barrier protection that keeps it on the bottom for a while. This is nice because it does stay on the bottom well which means you don't have to apply it very often. It also proves that it is protecting baby's bottom.
What's it smell like?
It doesn't smell like flowers, that's for sure. I can't really describe the smell other than to say it has a definite medicine smell. I can tolerate the medicine smell if it will get rid of the diaper rash.
What's in it?
Zinc Oxide is the active ingredient. This is the same stuff you see some of those sun worshippers wearing on their noses to protect their noses from the sun. It really does protect.
Does it have any other uses?
It can also be used for minor burns, cuts, scrapes, and sunburns. Truthfully, I have never used it for any of these conditions. I just can't see putting something that goes on my babies butt on their cuts and scrapes. That's what Neosporin and Bactine are for, LOL.
Are there any drawbacks?
Nothing is perfect, right? The drawback with this is actually how well it stays on. It really protects baby's bottom and stays on there very well. But this also means that it stays on mom's hands too. There are some diaper rash ointments on the market that claim to wipe off easier. I for one think that the sticking factor is what makes Desitin the best, so it sticking to me is a small price to pay.
After changing my baby's diaper I have to wash my hands anyway. I find that after using the Desitin I still have that "film" on my hands even after washing. This can be eliminated by using hotter water and washing a little longer. Not really a big deal since the product works so well. If it came off of us easily, it wouldn't protect babies bottoms so well.
I recommend Desitin Diaper Rash Ointment. It is not the most pleasing of products, but it works. When your baby has a diaper rash and is in pain, does it really matter if the ointment smells like a country meadow? No, all that matters is that it works, and that it works quickly. This definitely does that. It forms a protective barrier over your baby's bottom and that helps the diaper rash heal quickly.
