| DENGNY's Full Review: Desitin Diaper Rash Ointment |
I'll bet you're wondering what the title of this review has to do with something you spread on a baby's bottom. Well, I'll save that for last so you'll have to just bear with me.
Desitin has been in our house for years. I can remember using it on my little brother when I changed his diapers. I was thirteen when he was born, and therefore old enough to help out with a lot of chores with respect to him. I received at a relatively young age, an excellent education in routine child care.
My younger sister was eleven and also helped out, but changing my brother's diapers was not easy for her. You see, my sister had a hard time with the fact that every time the front of my brother's diaper came off, "Old Faithful" would begin to spout. She never quite got fast enough to prevent a mess. And sometimes the mess was on her. This little fact however, did not dissuade my mother from calling upon my sister's services...too often for my sister to be sure.
But, I digress...
The product works very well and seems to not only relieve the pain of diaper and other rashes, but also definitely speeds up the healing process. Yes, the product is a little greasy...but it's that oily film that prevents moisture from reaching the skin, thus keeping wetness from aggravating an already bad situation.
My only complaint from what I can remember is the smell. It does have a strong, harsh odor to it which is why I can never understand the story I am about to relate to you now.
One day my sister and I were playing with our new, most wonderful playmate when we heard a blood-curdling scream coming from the bathroom. It was Mom, and something happened that was obviously horrible. We ran to the bathroom only to find our dear mother leaning over the bathroom sink. Her face was almost purple.
Remember when I mentioned the smell? Although you would think so, my Mom never smelled it coming. Seems, in her haste to get ready for the day's activities...she grabbed the tube of Desitin instead of the Crest Tartar Control. Hastily, and without a thought in her sometimes dizzy head, she starting brushing her teeth with the stuff. Her face was purple because of her unsuccessful attempts at spitting out the ointment that had so effectively adhered itself to her teeth and gums.
It took her a little longer to get ready that morning. She was now in the process of getting all remnants of the mostly Cod Liver Oil ointment from her mouth. Remember that oily film I mentioned earlier? Well, I tend to think that the taste of Desitin must have lingered on for a long while. The look of sheer and utter disgust did not leave my Mom's face for quite some time thereafter. Happily I can report with 100% certainty, that she never got diaper rash on her teeth.
This in fact, is not the only instance of Mommy putting things to her lips that clearly don't belong there. My sister reminded me just the other day that Mom also once mistakenly gargled with Bactine. This type of behavior seems to run in my Mom's family. My uncle (Mom's brother) once used aerosol bug killer in place of hair spray, and her cousin sprayed disinfectant instead of underarm deodorant. I'll save the details of those stories in the event I ever feel inclined to review Raid or Lysol. Maybe this dysfunction has something to do with bathrooms...I just don't know. Mercifully though, this type of thing has skipped a generation.
Getting back to the subject at hand, what can we learn from this? Put the Desitin away when you're through using it. And, rushing through things can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Seriously though, Desitin is a great product with a great track record. I would highly recommend it...but, only for its intended purpose.
