Pros: A unique and effective approach to wavy or curly hair.
Cons: Best used after visiting the salon.
Devachan is a hair salon in Soho that specializes (though not exclusively) in curly or wavy hair and this is the line of products they sell. This particular group is for travel, packaged so you can carry them onboard. But it's the selection you'd buy in full size if you're using the brand.
Firstly, in order to feel comfortable with the technique, it's best to visit the salon, have a cut and let the stylist introduce you to the system. They wash your hair with No-Poo (or if you have oilier hair, Lo-Poo), which is very different than the shampoo you'd have been using. It doesn't create suds, but has the consistency of cream rinse. You massage it into your scalp (which they do so well in the salon), rinse. That's step one of the routine and No Poo is Devachan's answer to shampoo, a product they feel is less drying and less damaging to the hair. I really enjoy it, agreeing that it works and liking the way it feels as you're using it - creamy and gentle.
The second product is their conditioner, which works well. You can rinse it out totally or leave a bit in (experimenting is the best way to decide). It may be similar to other conditioners but I'm loyal to the line and stick with their products. It's not in this collection, but they also have products designed for particular hair colors.
You follow the conditioner by wrapping your hair in a towel just enough to do the next step, which is putting some of the Angel (a gooey gel) in the palm of your hands and working it through your hair (as you lean forward over the sink). Once it's distributed, you gently scrunch the hair from the tips towards the scalp, forming curls as you do. This product assures that the curls will hold. After you've scrunched all the hair, you take a paper towel and gently do the same motion, removing the water and encouraging the curls.
You may then clip the curls to give height to them and let the hair dry naturally or dry it with a diffusing hand dryer.
The product line has changed my approach to my hair. I follow it religiously as I have wavy hair, not curly, but this program makes my hair much curlier. The products are designed to eliminate dryness as well as frizz. The final product in this package is a white spray that adds moisture and softness to the hair. I spray it after pinning it though it's something you can also use between washings to refresh your hair. I'm extremely happy with the change these products and the routine have made.
My son has curly hair and uses the same stuff (eliminating No-Poo and just using Lo-Poo occasionally but washing his hair with the cream rinse) and it's amazing. He doesn't need to add clips as his hair dries into this well-shaped mound of curls.
If you want to try the products without visiting the shop, there's a book, "The Curly Look" you can obtain from Devachan.
