Yes, originally they were mounted on carriages, like cannon and had caissons full of ammunition. The whole shebang horse drawn. The five guys humped the ammo and wrassled the gun around. The manual - I think you must mean the book was 500 pages long - it's a history of the Maxim Gun. The instructions to operate the gun itself would be a page or two.
