I have found Dexol Fire Ant Granules to be a slightly above average fire ant controlling product. Some products are not effective at all, and Dexol granules do perform well, but not as well as the company claims. At least not in my Louisiana yard. - To effectively take care of the mounds that develop in my neighborhood (North Louisiana small town sandy soil), I use 1 and 1/2 times as much as the manufacturer recommends. Within 24 hours activity at the mound will practically end and within 48 hours there will be no ant activity in the area. - Only some of the ants are killed, and the others usually start a new home only a few feet away. I have tried to be very careful in my mound coverage so that the mound is entirely surrounded by the ant granules to prevent survivors escaping and starting a new mound. But the strong ones either sneak through the barrier or tunnel underground the start a new home. My neighborhood has narrow lots and we joke that they just move from one yard to another. So often when one neighbor puts out the ant granules in their yard, they will do the adjacent yard, also. - One bag will last me two or three months and I carefully store it so that children and pets will not get into the bag or knock it over creating dust that could be breathed. As another safety precaution I wear gloves when dealing with ant poison. Often I will apply the ant poison to mounds before I plan to bathe. That way I can wash my clothes and myself after dealing with product. This is perhaps overly cautious, but since I am the household cook and pets often jump on me, I feel I should be careful. - Dexol is a good product. It doesn't solve fire ant problems, but is a helpful product for a significantly disrupting fire ant progress. I have found it to be a mid-priced product when comparison shopping and have been reasonably satisfied with its performance for the price.
