DC Minimates: Guy Gardner & Kilowog — Green Lanterns Come with Plenty of Attitude

Written: Mar 23, 2012

Pros:Two Green Lanterns in one set; great painted lantern rings on hands; articulation is great
Cons:Paint application just a little sloppy around gloves
The Bottom Line: DC Minimates: Guy Gardner & Kilowog bring forth more members of the fabled Green Lantern Corps. It's all about the green.

Hal Jordan isn’t the only Green Lantern. There are plenty of others who wield the green ring of willpower. They are all part of the Green Lanterns Corps, an intergalactic police force boasting over 7,200 members protecting 3,600 sectors of the universe. And they all have distinct personalities, as shown with the Guy Gardner & Kilowog two-pack set from the DC Minimates collection.

Guy Gardner was selected by the Guardians of the Universe to serve as the first backup to Hal Jordan as Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. He possesses incredible willpower and a cocky attitude that rivals Jordan. He also believes that he is the best, which accounts for the smug look on his face. He is one of the Earth Green Lanterns not to wear a mask to conceal his identity. The hair is perfect sporting that bowl haircut that he made famous. Paint it black and he can pass for one of the Beatles... in a Green Lantern outfit, of course.

Speaking of his outfit, it is one of a kind. Nobody wears this at all making Gardner easily identifiable. The bulky jacket is extremely 1980s but for some reason it still suits him. There is good detailing on his jacket complete with the Green Lantern insignia off to one side. His belt looks great and fits nicely. The boots are oversized with belt buckles painted on the top for added effect. A surprising development is how the power ring is portrayed. With Hal Jordan and John Stewart, only a green dot is painted on the hand to indicate the power ring. With Gardner, he has the lantern symbol on his hand instead. It’s a much better presentation and shows that the power ring isn’t an afterthought. Included with Gardner is a Green Lantern battery to charge his ring that he can hold in his hand.

Kilowog looks like one of the most intimidating Green Lanterns just by his sheer size. He is the Corps’ drill sergeant who shapes up the new recruits. Kilowog’s frame uses the 2.5” Minimates body rather than the standard 2” frame just to differentiate his size. He wears a standard Green Lantern costume, or one that has become standard with John Stewart’s redesigned look. He is outfitted with a body plate that fits over his standard frame to make him look big and bulky. He, too, has the new lantern ring painted on his hand.

Kilowog also has a unique head to fit on his body. It’s a bit of a departure from the rest of the MInimates heads since this one his uniquely sculpted just for Kilowog. The purists do not like this because it takes away from his a standard head and building around it. In Kilowog’s case this isn’t done. I’m a bit torn because I can see the purists point of view. That cylindrical-shaped head is part of the identifying feature with Minimates. At the same time this is a pretty good compromise because he needs that bigger head for his frame. Speaking of big, his Green Lantern battery is proportionate to his size making it bigger than Gardner’s battery.

Both figures have 14-points of articulation. The paint application is clean and crisp. You can see definite separation, though the black areas do bleed a bit into the white gloves. The light colours are the hardest to control so I think this was done fairly well.

The presence of Guy Gardner & Kilowog helps build the Green Lantern Corps. Trying to create all 7,200 Green Lantern members could be a collection all unto itself, and I would love someone to take on the challenge. Of course it would help if we knew exactly the full roster. I have a feeling no one knows at all.
