| dannyzmom's Full Review: Diaper Rash Ointment |
My son has only had a few diaper rashes in his two years. Typically he gets a rash when he has an upset stomach and the acidity in his bowel movements irritates his tender skin. When he gets a diaper rash...he gets a diaper rash. I won't get too detailed, as I would hate for him to read this in 15 years and end up in therapy because his mother published details about his private parts...but let's just say everything in his diaper area gets red, irritated and sore.
We have always been faithful Balmex people. We tried Desitin once, but hated the fishy smell. Recently, on a trip to visit family in New Jersey, poor Danny had explosive diaper problems on the airplane. Unfortunately, he was forced to sit in it for an extra 10 minutes (and the poor guy sitting next to us was forced to endure the fragrance) while we waited for the "fasten your seatbelt" sign to go off. By the time I got him cleaned up and we got to our final destination, his nether regions were in a state of extreme distress. On the way from the airport to Nana's house, we bought a tube of Gerber Diaper Rash Ointment for $4.99 and gave it a try. We were quite pleased. Within 24 hours, the whole area was soothed and no longer red or irritated.
Gerber Diaper Rash Ointment surprised me from the start. I opened the 4 ounce tube, and out oozed this thick, rich lotion. Most diaper rash lotions contain a high concentration of zinc oxide, and as far as I ever knew, zinc oxide was thick and white and very hard to spread (I remember my grandfather used to wear a thick stripe of it on his nose when we went to the beach). Gerber Diaper Rash Ointment contains 40% zinc oxide, yet still manages to come out of the tube quite smooth and easy to spread...I'm still stumped. The next thing that surprised me was the scent...or lack thereof. It really didn't have much of an odor. Yet, it contains 13.56% cod liver oil!!! I really expected it to have that nasty fishy odor so reminiscent of Desitin, but, alas - no offensive odor!
I applied a thick layer of the Gerber Diaper Rash Ointment as soon as we got to the house and changed his diaper. I immediately noticed how cooling this stuff felt, even on my fingers. So, I would assume it was quite cooling and soothing to his irritated parts. The ointment serves to soothe the irritated area and seal out moisture to keep it from getting more irritated as the child sits in wet diapers. It did for my son exactly what it said it would do. His rash was cleared up in less than 24 hours. I continued to apply it at each diaper change for several days to keep the rash from reappearing until his upset stomach calmed down and his bowel movements were less acidic. That was in June. He hasn't had a diaper rash since.
Living here in South Florida in the summertime...it's hot. I can't imagine how uncomfortable it must be wearing a diaper in this weather. For the sake of prevention, I apply Gerber Diaper Rash Ointment to my son's diaper area several times a day. This stuff does just what it says it will do: Treat and prevent diaper rash. I am impressed.
