Electronics are expensive. They’re made even more expensive when you factor in the accessories you have to purchase with them. With advancements in technology and more features being added to my favorite gadgets, it feels like I’m constantly in a state of upgrading. Point-and-shoot camera upgrades every two years. Computer upgrades every three. The fact that my three-year-old laptop is still an awesome system by today’s standards has been a pleasant surprise.
My last iPod marked a new generation of iPods that could store and display photos. Since then, Apple has added several important features to the iPod, necessitating (read: wanting badly because I absolutely need (also read: want) to have video-playing capabilities and games) an upgrade one month short of three years after my last purchase. I love my new Apple 80GB Classic iPod. This upgrade was the easiest on my pocket this year due to a 10% off recycling program offered by Apple and the fact that I had many iPod accessories that are universally compatible with any model in the iPod line. The one new accessory I had to buy was a case. After buying (and returning) two cases I was unhappy with, I found a winner: The Digital Life Outfitters HipCase Leather Folio.
Design
The Digital Life Outfitters HipCase Leather Folio is a sleek-looking black leather case. The leather is actually pretty thick and firm, unlike some flimsy low-quality leather cases on the market. The iPod slips into a center compartment which leaves the screen and touch wheel open to use the iPod. The top and bottom of the case have openings for the headphone and power ports, respectively. A leather flap folds over the front of the iPod when not in use or when the user does not need to interact with the screen to protect it. The flap is secured by a magnetic closure. The inside of this flap has a small pocket where an ID could fit, probably for convenience. I often take my iPod to the gym and slip my gym membership card in there when I don’t want to bring my pocketbook in. A belt clip adorns the back of the case for easy traveling. The case is form fitting and adds very little bulk to the iPod. It fits easily in my jacket pocket or purse with the case on.
My only problem with the design of the case is that it takes away from the look of the iPod. I purchased the silver classic iPod and the case covers all of the silver portions. This wasn’t a deal-breaker for me, however, as I also love the look of the case.
Protection
I quickly learned a case would be a necessity for my iPod when I saw how quickly small scratches and blemishes were appearing on its metallic back. As I mentioned before, the leather is high quality. The material is thick and offers a good amount of padding against most shocks the iPod will normally incur. As always, I wouldn’t recommend dropping your electronics, but this will protect the device well against most trauma. The screen is bare when the flap is open, so this won’t protect it from fingerprints.
Compatibility
The Digital Life Outfitters HipCase Leather Folio is compatible with both the 80 GB and 160GB Classic iPods.
Price and Availability
This case was priced at $29.99 at Best Buy at the time of purchase, but the employee we dealt with was nice enough to give us 15% off since I purchased it with my new digital SLR camera. I actually paid $25.49. It seems to be widely available online and at most electronics stores. It was a little expensive, but worth it to have a case I liked that would protect my new iPod.
