| shopaholic_man's Full Review: Digital Products International Clok Smooth iPod Do... |
My son has a terrible time getting up for school. His cell phone alarm clock just isn't loud enough and he seems to tune me out. We decided to look into alarm clocks that were louder and could wake him to music.
We saw the Clok at Target and took it home. It was forty bucks which I thought was steep for an alarm, but it boasted the ability to play your iPod to wake you and had a cool look to it. It is a large device for an alarm clock, about 8 inches across and five inches high and deep. The clok is supposed to wake you up with an alarm, the iPod or the FM radio.
Problem One - Setting the Alarm Setting the time and the alarm is not intuitive, but nevertheless, I followed along with the instructions to set the alarm. Sometimes it works, sometimes the alarms just don't come on. I have no idea why, and the clok has no indication about whether the alarm is set and ready to go. It has two alarms built in (in case you don't wake to the first), but if they don't go off, well.....
Problem Two - The iPod When it does work, it won't work with the iPod like it should. My son set his favorite song Are You Dead Yet by the Finnish Death Metal Band Children of Bodom. Well Alexi Laiho never got to scream it in his ears the following morning, because the song just didn't play. When you do use this to play the iPod, the little speakers are tinny and terrible sounding, and putting the bass button on just makes the product worse.
Problem Three - FM The little FM antennae doesn't seem to really bring in any stations well. If the alarm would work, I guess you could wake up to intermittent static.
Problem Four - The Alarm sound I watched my son sleep the one time the alarm actually worked. He slept right through it. Not even a twitch.
The Good - The Display The LED display on this gives a large and easy to read display of the time that is readable day or night. For light sleepers, there is a dimmer button.
The Better - Target's Return Policy I was unhappy with this Clok Alarm. We tried it for three days, and couldn't get the [insert objectionable descriptive curse words here] alarm to work. Once, when it did work, my son discovered you can set the sleep button for 90 minutes. Isn't the purpose of a [insert curse word not used before here] alarm to wake you up without letting you go back to sleep for another hour!
Complaint that has nothing to do with this Clok Why doesn't the iTunes program on my computer allow me to set the computer to play a random selection of Finnish Death Metal in the A.M. at 90 decibels? I've looked on line for a downloadable alarm function. I used to have a program called Music Jukebox that let me program an alarm function. Since my computers are all hooked into my audio systems, that would wake anyone up.
Summary I returned this to Target today. I hated it. The sound is awful, the FM reception is terrible, the instructions are poor, and many times after setting the twin alarms, they simply DON'T WORK One Star
