Pros: Works on cold symptoms and quiets cough in most cases.
With all the up and down weather we've had this winter, colds were inevitable and I expected them. Usually when my kids get colds, they come about a week apart, just when one is getting over one, another one gets it, so cold medicine is always in the cupboard. We usually rely on Dimetapp for colds and allergies, but this time when my kids started getting their latest colds, they were accompanied by a cough. First it was my nine year old son, then my 13 year old daughter and then my three year old, all within a few days of each other! Needless to say, the regular Dimetapp just wouldn't do anything for the cough and my nine year old was starting to lose sleep because of the cough, so I sent my husband to pick up some medicine that would not only work for the stuffy and runny nose, but on the cough also. He came home with Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir. Since Dimetapp has always worked so well, this should be just the ticket to help the kids symptoms, or so we thought.
You can get Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir in either a 4 or 8 ounce bottle, depending on your needs, we got the 8 ounce bottle since we would be using it for two of our three kids. It comes in red grape flavor, but honestly, how can you really make a cough medicine taste good? They like the grape flavor of the regular Dimetapp, but barely tolerate the Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir red grape flavor. I've tasted it and I don't blame them!
What do you use it for and how much?
Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir treats basically the same thing that the regular Dimetapp does, but adds a cough suppressant to help quiet coughs. It treats your child's stuffy nose, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and coughing.
Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir is recommended for children six years and up, you need to consult with your doctor if the child is under six for the correct dosage. Children ages 6 to 11 will need to take 2 teaspoons every 4 to 6 hours for relief and children age 12 to adult will have to take 4 teaspoons. We consulted our doctor and he told us to give my 3 year old 3/4 of a teaspoon, this was not an easy task because of the taste!
Does it work?
Well, that depends on which child you ask me about. It worked great with my nine year old, it quieted his cough where he could get a good nights sleep and worked on his stuffy nose and sneezing. Unfortunately it didn't work so well with my three year old, it actually made his cough worse. We ended up going back to using the regular Dimetapp for him. We only used the Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir after school and at night for my nine year old, mainly because the biggest side effect is drowsiness and it does make him quite tired, but it did work on his symptoms and I'm happy to say his cold is completely gone now.
The active ingredients in Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir are Brompheniramine maleate, Dextromethorphan HBr and Pseudoephedrine HCI.
As with any medicine, always check with your doctor if you have any type of health condition before taking this, also check with your doctor if you are taking any prescription medications.
I definitely recommend you give Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir a try, granted it's not the best tasting medicine out there, but it works on most cough and cold symptoms.
