| gjacks's Full Review: Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir |
I have twin boys who will be 11 months old on March 3, 2001. They were sick last week and we took them to the doctor. She prescribed some medicine and them suggested that we pick up a bottle of Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir to help with the congestion and runny noses.
Boy, were we in for a surprise. The doctor told us that this would help them breathe and, therefore, sleep at night. Well, not only did it help them breathe, it kept them up all night. There were a couple of nights that Jonathan woke up around 2:30 and looked like he was on drugs. He was WIDE-EYED and ready to play. This was not exactly what we had in mind…now we didn’t get to sleep any.
Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir was recently pulled from the shelves because of a study done on the ingredient Phenylpropanolamine. I’m not sure what the side effect were supposed to be, but they were bad enough to have it pulled from the shelves. It was then re-released with Sudafed added instead of Phenylpropanolamine.
I don’t know if Sudafed caused the adverse reaction my kids had to Dimetapp or if it just doesn’t jive with my children. But, if your doctor suggests trying this out on your children, I would highly recommend giving it to them first thing in the morning to see how they react to it during the day. If it does what it is supposed to, there will be no side effects in the area of drowsiness or insomnia. If they are able to keep on their regular schedule and it doesn’t seem to affect their naps, then I would continue giving it to them at night.
As far as helping with the cold symptoms, it did a fairly good job. We just couldn’t keep them on it because we weren’t able to get any sleep. We finally went back to the doctor and asked for something else that would allow them and us to sleep at night.
I would recommend Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir to anyone in which it works for. But, You better try it out first in the morning before you give it to your kids at night…if you don’t, you may be in for some sleepless nights.
