| Annie_Crane's Full Review: Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir |
Acetaminophen can cause liver damage in your child!
Being a 32 year old mother of four children, ages ranging from 15 1/2 months to 9 1/2 years then you experiment, try, sample and either approve of a lot of medications or disapprove throughout that period of time.
Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir is one of those OTC medications that I do not approve of. I know all OTC medicines have all types of side effects. However, that is not the only reason why I do not like the Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir.
Let us start with the price. Approximately $9.00 dollars per eight ounce bottle (depending on where you shop), is just a bit extreme for any type of OTC cold relief.
However, if you live by the stuff but can't afford it, call your doctor's office and request a sample. They usually have them in stock and will give them away if you just ask.
Another thing, the great tasting grape flavor that they claim to have, where is it? The active ingredients Acetaminophen, Brompheniramine, Phenylpropanolamine can't help but create a distinctive taste that is less than pleasant. No matter how great the grape flavor really is. And, when you are trying to medicate an irritable, cranky, coughing, congested child, then you need to stand by the claim of having a pleasant taste.
My children actually cringe and whine when they see the purple liquid being poured onto a spoon for them. Personally, I have sampled Dimetapp's Elixir and I find it a dab easier to swallow than Liquid Benadryl but, I'm not the one needing it. My children despise the taste and giving them a dose of Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir is not as beneficial if half of it ends up running down their chin instead of in their mouth, past their throat and on its way to relieving their cough like the medicine is suppose to. When I am successful at administering Dimetapp, then there is only minor relief with their cough and cold symptoms.
And now, the last thing, the fact that to much Acetaminophen can cause liver damage. I try to mention this in all of my reviews about medicines that have the ingredient Acetaminophen. It's important that parents become aware that even slightly overdosing your child with this ingredient can be life threatening. Eight years ago, a five year old boy died due to liver damage after being administered a medication that included Acetaminophen. And since then, there have been many cases of liver damage and death associated with it. So, take precaution while taking care of your children.
God Bless!
